@metsbooth @baseballhistorynut Your list of rare events is missing one of the rarest: June 24, 2005 when the Mets hits THREE SAC FLIES IN ONE INNING! Bernie Williams flubbed one to extend the inning. First time ever by an NL club.
Not five minutes ago, both Faust and Starman were raving how well NYR played in Los Angeles. You'd have thought Gotham romped to a victory in California.
With Colorado practically running the table, ponder this:
Not that I'm advocating for NYR to have an atrocious season.
But, if NYR had to suffer a crash and burn, what better season to do it in than one where NYR was still unlikely to taste pie even if they led the division?
He accepted the wager, albeit a twenty-five cent "gentleman's bet".
Well, Messier did indeed receive his gifts and I won the bet. That said, I never received the quarter from Brooks, which (sigh) I should have had framed and signed by him.
Now, it's too late.
Farewell, Larry.
(cont'd) Second story described the crystal hockey stick.
But, before my second story aired, I received an email from Brooksie: "Don't count on it."
Larry was telling me that his intel had Messier playing one more season. I wrote back: "Wanna bet?" (more)
(cont'd) You see, at that point in time there was no speculation at all that Messier had already played his final NHL game. This was big. Then came the email: "Go ahead and break the story!"
I did. In two parts.
First story was kinda vague about what the gift was. (more)
(cont'd) But, the mayor of the town had been boasting how Ruckl had been chosen for this honor. My contact at DenikSport reached out to me with this scoop. But, he made me promise not to break the story until DenikSport did. I sat on the story for a few hours. (more)
(cont'd) DenikSport had broken a story titled: "Rückl ceský krištál"
It said that Glen Sather had contracted with a Czech firm (named Ruckl) to fashion a crystal hockey stick for Moose's retirement ceremony. It was supposed to be hush-hush. (more)
Eleven years ago, I received an email from Larry Brooks saying, "Don't be too sure."
He was responding to the story I broke regarding Mark Messier's MSG tenure on June 3, 2004

The story had actually broken in Prague about the crystal hockey stick (more)
Sorta back up. Mostly hobbling. If you cannot get in, it's likely because you're using a link beginning "https://t.co/THDPHv89ly...." Replace "echo" with "www" and you'll get in. I had to strip some hardware from Echo to make Gretchen run again. So, Echo is down.
@Rainmaker1973 The larger dolphin that swam above and across was heard to say, "Junior, how many times have I told you not to play with your food before you eat it!"
In an effort to turn things around and (perhaps) institute a more cohesive backchecking regimen, Chris Drury has hired a coach who helmed the third-worst defense in the league... and who was let go by Pittsburgh (in part) for that very reason.
So, let me see if I've got this straight.
NYR concluded 2024-2025 in the middle of the pack in terms of goals scored per game and goals allowed per game.
