The Term “Christianity”

Obviously, since the term “Christian” became into being in the scriptural sense for some disciples, in the Book Of Acts (11:24 and 26:28) and 1 Peter 4:16, for those in Antioch, Syria, it was a matter of time in the 30s CE or shortly beyond, the movement would have this title applied to them;

Ignatius of Antioch is credited with one of the earliest uses of the term "Christianity" (Greek: Χριστιανισμός, CHristianismos) around 100 CE., so obviously the term was well in use by then. Ignatius of Antioch is also credited with the earliest known use of the term "Catholic" in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans around 110 CE, but he meant it as “universal”, according to Anglican bishop and theologian Joseph Lightfoot.

The term "Christian" is used three times in The Apostolic Writings. In all three cases, the term was used in a derisive way to refer to followers of the Messiah who did not acknowledge the emperor of Rome. But the original Apostles did not use this term for themselves. The were known as “Nazarenes”, members of “The Way”.

What happen the “Christianity” by the last quarter of the 3rd Century CE, that they seemingly went awry, that these days, a narrow path of them, prefer the term for themselves as “1st Century Christian/Christianity”?

Even worst, less than half of a century later, that Constantinople Constantine came along in the 4th Century, that “reconfigured” Christianity to something quite different than that of the 1st and 2nd Centuries CE, and some prefer to be referred to as “Pre-Constantine Christian”!
