I'm endlessly proud of our @HerbertSchoolHU graduate #journalism students, who impress me more each semester. Last month, we had a few complete their capstone project, which is the largest piece of journalism they do as part of their academic journey @HofstraU.
The goal is to have the students produce a multiplatform story that is good enough to use for their portfolio as they dive into the workforce and try to land their first or next gig.
Cody Hmelar produced incredible audio about the multigenerational language evolution of Cantonese and Toisanese. Megan Naftali developed a full digital lifestyle magazine and business. Charles Shaw crafted a project about battling misinformation in science. Jasmine Thelemaque tackled the rising cost of concert tickets in the post-pandemic and high-inflation economy.
All worked on stories that were passionate to them, which was so clear when they made their formal presentations and knocked it out of the park. You can view their work here: https://t.co/mAa7lUAhyH
I can't wait to follow each of their journeys for years to come ...
Great chat tonight with some of our incredible Hofstra graduate journalism students. The topic was the power of Hofstra's campus media, and if you're familiar with our Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, you're familiar with the award-winning journalism at The Hofstra Chronicle, WRHU, Hofstra TV, and the Long Island Advocate.
The student panelists are outstanding representatives of our university and will be for years to come. Tonight's discussion reaffirmed what I always believed: that our Hofstra students are incredibly talented storytellers who continue to set the bar very high for our collective standard of excellence as a university and journalism program.
On a personal note, I always talk about The Hofstra Chronicle's impact on the early stages of my career, especially as a leader and manager. The experiences I had, the relationships I built, and the feelings I cultivated have never left me. I want that for every one of our students.

The series is about immigrants on Long Island struggling to survive: https://t.co/BNVjPsYqU0
I've had time to reflect on the incredible semester we had with @HerbertSchoolHU’s graduate journalism program. There were 13 students who finished their capstone work and made us proud.
Without naming every student and all of their detailed projects, I'll say that it was a very rewarding experience reading, watching and reviewing everything. It was even more exciting to see them present and tell each that they finished our program on a high note.
From sustainability and press freedom to the impact of sports betting and revitalization in their hometowns, there was one immersive journalism experience after another. Several of these students have already landed jobs. Many others are close.
