“We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.”
“We Wear the Mask" - Paul Laurence Dunbar
What is your understanding of the shadow?
Robert Bly aptly describes keeping an invisible bag with us from our earliest ages in which, to keep our parent’s love we stuff the undesirable parts of ourselves. This continues with school and our teachers, then our peers and so on.. Our identities are shaped by incomplete versions we’ve fashioned in the name of acceptance and approval.
In the judaeo-christian west, says Bly, usually in the bag goes our s*xuality and our spontaneity too.
In the Tarot, the shadow is best illustrated in card 15 - the Devil. Speaking to the unconscious and the suppression of self. Of giving rise to hedonism and the selfish desire for gratification. Of being a slave to materialism (to matter) in which resides a sort of emptiness, unable to control our urges/impulses and lacking the willpower to change. For if the devil is the Natural Law of matter - in direct contrast to Spirit - it stands to reason the more blocks we hold, the greater the weight we carry, the heavier we are in the material. “For man alone can make a living spirit from the law of matter when he identifies his consciousness with this law [...] this spirit which has come alive only through man, can react by throwing back man’s reflection, luring him into ruin, hell and perdition.”
We are not just divided in this material world by sex (gender), but internally our masculine and feminine energies/essences (or if you prefer contra-s*xual archetypes; the Animus and Anima) are so often shockingly out of balance within our being. Understandably so given the conditioning we’ve all received. We are at total odds with our Selves. Refuting or denying parts that very often simply ask for acknowledgment and a place at the table.
I like to use the analogy of a perfect but malleable sphere, which in this case represents our well adjusted self. However when we are taking precious care of this object and we are under stress, anxiety or suppressing aspects of ourselves - our grip tightens and this object that was in perfect wholeness is now completely out of shape. Like putty - parts are seeping out from between our fingers and each of these is a fracture or contortion of the perfect whole, no longer unified but still connected. In the realm of sexuality for example this might become a darker sort of proclivity. In getting needs met this might become less direct and more manipulative. There are as many maladaptive behaviors and patterns as there are contortions and each plays into the other directly or indirectly. As we dismiss or bury parts or, adversely, succumb to them - we nurture their power over us and it is very easy to go down a rabbit hole from which the prospect of returning can seem like too much to bear.
And all the while we crave union. This is the desire to be whole within ourselves and yet more often than not is sought in union with another… But these moments can be short lived as the happiness we sought dissipates and the return to the mundane inevitably happens. The material world is one of separation, at least in the physical. But in the ‘matter’ of the spirit - this union can be realized as we transform and welcome all our fractured pieces into harmony. From this place, One of Wholeness and acceptance, we can live fully. Because the love we sought is no longer something external. We are it, and free to give it. For we are not the source of love, love is the source… and through us it flows.
"From the power that holds all in fee
He who overcomes himself is free"
-goethe

What does it mean to feel whole? What does it mean to live authentically, for that matter? We are constantly navigating the delicate balance of staying true to ourselves without succumbing to the pressure of conforming to societal expectations. It is not uncommon for us to seek external validation or adopt new identities in the pursuit of success or acceptance. However, it is important to pause and reflect on who or what we are truly serving in these endeavors.
Rather than passing judgment on others, what if we took a moment to examine our own roles and the messages we convey. It is crucial to question the authenticity of our words and actions before we get caught up in the pursuit of attention and personal glorification, particularly in the world of social media. Resisting the temptation to believe our own hype and instead seek greater self-awareness and a touch of humility.
We are all imperfect beings, and acknowledging this truth can be a powerful catalyst for growth. It allows us to laugh at ourselves and make necessary course corrections along the way. Can we be brave enough to recognize that hypocrisy exists on a vast spectrum in all of us, and a level of vigilance is required in aligning our words and actions. It is not enough to staunchly defend our choices and beliefs without a modicum of self-awareness. There is a need to engage in self-reflection, understanding the deeper motivations behind our behaviors and decisions.
This is wholly reflected in the world of s*x and intimacy. Are we bringing a level of consciousness to our private [or otherwise] interactions. What value do you put on intimacy? Is it something sacred? something shared.. Or is there an animal or base need that dictates your efforts? Are we getting our needs met with little regard for other, or little self-awareness in what is driving us? Adversely what are we allowing? Are we disowning our own hearts for fear of greater emotional pain or abandonment? Does manipulation or a lack of clarity play a part for the players. Is there shame around desire and healthy expression? Perhaps there is the complete abdication or suppression of desires buried deep under mounds of compounded shame. It’s all valid, and the simple fact remains that it is all interwoven with our very ground of being.
Often, we blindly seek external solutions to our internal struggles, blaming the world around us for our insecurities and shortcomings. However, as cliche as it sounds, true transformation starts from within. It requires us to address the unaddressed aspects of ourselves and challenge the justifications we make to soothe our own discomfort. Whether it's through shopping, mindlessly scrolling through social media, or indulging in unhealthy habits, unhealthy s*x, toxic relationships… there is often something deeper that we are avoiding.
The urge to bypass the necessary work and seek instant outcomes is all to easy. But It is important to delve deeper, to explore the intricacies of our own experiences and emotions. Striving for knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, recognizing that the journey itself is the destination.
Each experience we have, every scar we carry and its residual memory, contributes to the abundant complexity of our identity. Our perspectives, judgments, and reactions are shaped by our past experiences, sometimes clouding our ability to see clearly in the present. Trauma is not the event itself, but is what inhabits our being as a result. So to take care and be mindful of our biases and assumptions, understanding that others have their own unique stories and struggles that we may never fully comprehend.
It is time to dismantle, if not tear down with great enthusiasm, the towers we have built around ourselves. Right down to the very questionable foundations. To let some light back in. With an open heart and mind be willing to examine every brick, to challenge the beliefs and perceptions that each one represents. This process requires patience, compassion, and self-forgiveness. Embrace our humanity, forgive ourselves for being human, recognizing that self-love [at least in the western world] is not innate but learned. We don't need others to dictate our beliefs or actions; instead, we can discover our own truths through personal exploration, acceptance, and with gentle nourishing guidance. This guidance comes in many forms, be they spiritual, therapeutic, er*tic, practical, but if they are truly healing then they are giving you the space, time and tools to forge your own path, to reclaim your Self and s*xuality without being told what you “should” do or believe. And most certainly without betraying yourself under the pressure of authoritative figureheads.
By cultivating self-awareness, balance, and compassion, we can rebuild ourselves from the ground up. We can become individuals who are in tune with our thoughts, emotions, dreams, desires and k*nks, approaching every interaction with authenticity, openness, and empathy. And when we stumble along the way, we can reflect on our experiences without self-blame or collapse. Remember, you are the answer you have been searching for, and the true essence of fulfillment - and dare I say the proverbial Kingdom - lies within you.
