English teachers have been gatekeeping the Iliad from us.
I was taught the odyssey in a piecemeal manner—skipping around and cutting out parts—in high school and an intro-level college English course. We never even touched on the Iliad.
It’s almost like there was a concerted effort to get young men disinterested in literature.
Currently reading the Samuel Butler prose translation and it absolutely rips. Battle scenes with spears going through guys’ nipples and temples, elements of epic fantasy, warriors going berserker mode in the “fray,” gods playing cloak and dagger politics… and I’m only 50 pages in.
Seriously, the battle scenes stand up to my modern, dopamine-jacked troglodyte brain.
Guys have to give this a try.
Men’s swimwear is a quagmire right now.
I’m struggling to find swim trunks that meet the following specs:
- 5-7” inseam
- Good liner: something you forget is there. I honestly prefer the mesh liner over compression.
- Dries fast
- Good patterns: colorful, not muted; tasteful prints
- Minimal fade
- Doesn’t cost $400. Absolute max budget for swim should realistically be $120
Help a brother out.
Another interesting trend in young professionals: the lack of professionalism.
I think there’s a decent chunk of post-grad unemployment that can be chalked up to this.
I was talking to an intern at another company in my sector, and the the kid couldn’t go 3 sentences without calling me “my guy” repeatedly. He’s from a respectable, low-admission rate private college.
Other guys at my company complain about recent grads opting out of post-work beers. Their biggest concern is that these kids don’t buy into the culture.
There’s a blatant lack of social development in those who were in high school during Covid. The ability to socialize in work settings is such a differentiator now.
Skipping drinks with colleagues, friends, and women in your 20s & 30s to “protect your health” is quietly sabotaging your career, your social circle, and your dating life.
Learn to drink responsibly.
A few drinks build bonds that kale smoothies never will.
@fece_lord It’s out of control, man.
The GS chino shorts are up $10 too.
Polos across the board are all like $120-130 now.
Faherty cranked up their linen shirt from $178 to $198. Not sure who’s paying $200 for a seasonal shirt…
Regardless of how the film turns out, I hope, at the very least, it inspires people to starting reading the classics again.
A great intro to the ancient classics is Xenophon’s Anabasis (or Persian Expedition). It’s super accessible and entertaining
I plan to reread the Odyssey and read (for the first time) the Iliad before the movie release.
I’ve got some super old copies of the WHD Rouse translations that look awesome on the shelf, but it’s time to put them to work.
