@Habitat_org’s global advocacy campaign seeking policy change, so residents of slums and other informal settlements have a safe, secure place to call home.
We’re proud to mark another year of progress through the #HomeEquals campaign - driving change in slums and informal settlements around the world. 🌍 Here’s what Year 2 looked likeWe’re proud to mark another year of progress through the #HomeEquals campaign - driving change in slums and informal settlements around the world. 🌍 Here’s what Year 2 looked like:
@HFHMalawi and Mzuzu City Council held a three-day technical validation workshop in Nkhata Bay District to review and refine the proposed Mzuzu City Building By-laws.
The workshop followed a broader stakeholder review session held in Mzuzu on 15 May 2026, during which input was gathered from various interested parties.
The workshop was held under the Building and Repairing Homes for Sustainable Urban Communities and @HomeEquals projects, both of which Habitat for Humanity Malawi is implementing in Mzuzu City.
By helping align policy, financing and action across sectors, the Global Housing Continuum offers a clearer way to analyze how housing systems actually function — and how they can work better for people.

We are thrilled to introduce the Global Housing Continuum: A global tool for local action that provides practical framework designed to help policymakers, practitioners, advocates, funders, and communities better understand the full spectrum of housing conditions.
#HomeEquals turns three today! 🎉
We celebrate the advocacy wins across the Habitat network that have improved access to adequate housing for 14.2 million people around the world – bringing us close to our goal of reaching 15 million!
This week, @HFHMalawi paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development and the @LLCityCouncil to strengthen partnerships in the housing and urban development sector. The visits underscored the critical role of collaboration in addressing Malawi’s pressing housing challenges.
@HFHMalawi has been actively supporting the sector by implementing the @HomeEquals and Global Mission Fund (GMF) projects in Area 27, Lilongwe. The organisation has also provided technical support to the Ministry in developing Malawi House Designs, the National Housing Policy and Bill, and the National Slum Upgrading and Prevention Strategy (SUPs).
Over 1.1B people live in informal settlements — without action, millions more will remain in inadequate housing by 2030.
Addressing this is key to climate resilience, health and inclusion.

1 in 3 people worldwide lack adequate housing, and more than 1.1 billion people live in informal settlements. Housing remains chronically underinvested, despite its central role in economic growth, climate resilience, health, education, and equity. It is time for action.
As G7 development ministers prepare for the International Development Ministerial ahead of the G7 Summit, over 60 @Habitat_org national organizations & partners are calling on them to elevate adequate housing as a cross‑cutting catalyst for development

As rapid urbanization continues without affordable and adequate housing strategies, so too does the number of people living in slums and informal settlements. Strengthening housing systems is essential to ensuring urban growth leads to inclusion and opportunity.
Housing is part of a broader system that shapes health, education, and economic participation. When housing systems fall short, progress across development goals does too.
We will be co-leading a workshop with @UNHABITAT@UNEP and Buildings Performance Institute Europe, on Delivering Sustainable and Affordable Housing That Lasts - exploring how to reconcile housing affordability with environmental sustainability & climate resilience.
We look forward to joining 700+ global leaders advancing climate action in the built environment at the Sustainable Buildings & Construction Summit 2026!

People living in informal settlements face heightened health risks due to inadequate housing. This #WorldHealthDay, we urge governments to recognize housing as central to public health, partner with communities and prioritize housing solutions for informal settlements.
Our research has shown that widescale improvements on housing in informal settlements can help increase life expectancy and school attendance, and boost GDP. The benefits are undeniable.
