Each year in Canada, more than 100 women and girls are murdered. These acts of violence are a failure of the systems that continue to plague women and girls. We must continue to seek improvements in policies and the care that victims of violence require.
This week we commemorate the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
On December 6, 1989, a lone gunman entered the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal and in an antifeminist mass shooting, murdered 14 women, injured 10 more as well as 4 men.
For nearly 20 minutes the shooter moved through corridors on multiple floors of the building, the cafeteria, and another classroom, targeting women. The massacre is widely regarded as an act of misogynistic terrorism and representative of wider societal violence against women.
