Dublin is every bit as amazing as I’d dreamed. Can’t wait to speak to early years teachers, parents and professionals from across Ireland beginning this Friday in Cork.
The @irishexaminer ran a lovely story today about my visit and planned Valentine’s Day session. I’ll link it in the first reply below.
At the heart of children’s social and emotional development is self-awareness – a growing sense of who they are as individuals.
Over the next several weeks I’ll be partnering with @earlychildhood (the UK’s Royal Foundation Centre on Early Childhood) to explore children’s social and emotional development in celebration of the Centre’s newest publication, The Shaping Us Framework (a link to which you can find in the first reply below).
For infants, knowing oneself – the first of six skill clusters identified in the Framework – is a skill developed from square one. Which is to say that, as newborns, we are not yet equipped with the self-awareness necessary to understand ourselves as independent beings.
Indeed, it is not until 6-9 months of age that we begin to realize that we are separate from our caregivers.
How we come to understand ourselves is, in part, a reflection on how we are responded to from our earliest moments.
Speaking of reflections, did you know that it’s not until 15-18 months that infants recognize that the reflection in a mirror is actually them?
Check out this lovely video example, shared to TT by talinfakhoorian, in which her son finds delight in interacting with the hilarious new “friend” he’s found in the mirror.
As he grows, his sense of self will develop in important new ways.
In the next post in this series, I’ll talk about the emergence of agency and the importance of allowing your toddler to make appropriate choices of their own.
Our knowledgeable and talented Parent Infant Mental Health Diversity Co-ordinator and Infant Feeding Peer Supporter Forida attended Tameside Civil Mayor's Celebrating Cultural Diversity Festival yesterday, where she bumped into one of our Trustees Cllr @tafsharif.
We had such an energising time at the #ReadingRights summit yesterday and can't wait to put all the conversations into action!

“I know how powerful it is when we give children the support that they need and they deserve.”
At the #WEF25, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham received the Crystal Award for two decades of tireless commitment to children’s rights.

I only have eyes for you, Dad. 👀
Take a moment to admire not only this sweet “serve and return” conversation between this father and daughter - but the completely unbroken eye contact they share.
Eye contact is an important early developmental milestone for your baby and key to strengthening attachment during infancy.
So carve out time for regular face-to-face interaction.
This eight-week-old is in a particular sweet spot on the eye contact front, as newborns’ vision tends to take on greater clarity and focus between 6-10 weeks.
Suddenly she can see dad’s face in detail and doesn’t want to miss a single second.
What a sweet duo.
(Note that if your baby is not making regular eye contact by 2-3 months of age, it’s worth bringing this to the attention of your pediatrician - as this may be a sign of a vision issue or other developmental concern.)

As the weekend approaches, let's reflect on something that made us happy this week 😊
It can be big or a small win. We'd love to hear it, so drop your one good thing in the comments... bonus points if you have more than one!

In a world that often prioritizes productivity over presence, we risk losing sight of what truly enriches our lives. C.S. Lewis once reminded us that our culture sometimes misaligns its values, placing worldly ambitions above personal relationships.
Let's shift the narrative.
As a beneficiary of Dolly Parton's @dollyslibrary we want to inspire a love of reading with the families that we support.

A number of our Coordinators are fully trained to offer NBO's (New Born Observation) to our families.
The results have proven to show parents how to observe their baby's behaviour as a method of communication.
We highly recommend these courses. 💜
