There is a groundswell of activity for around a month & a half surrounding the day:
✅Not simply a day of observance or celebration, World Homeless Day is a community capacity building program, through which significant change & progress occurs in over 100 countries on six continents to prevent & decrease people's experience of homelessness.
✅Billions of $£€+ are raised for charity.
✅Housing & Homelessness summits & roundtables are hosted, as well as industry conferences, on or close to the date.
✅The date itself is used to set goals, benchmark progress & celebrate accomplishments from one year to the next on October 10th.
✅Changes to government policies & laws are announced, accompanied by the release of new funding in relation to housing policy & the alleviation of suffering & prevention of death for those currently experiencing homelessness.
✅In Parliments, declarations, debates & announcements are made.
✅New money & policy is released to prevent homelessness (prevention is widely considered as the most useful policy regarding homelessness).
✅Various research findings, official inquiry reports, senate inquiry reports and new government papers are often released on or with close proximity to the date.
✅Memorials are held for those who have died while homeless.
✅Workplace celebrations are held to acknowledge the contributions of staff & volunteers who work to prevent & end homelessness & alleviate the suffering of those experiencing it. Sometimes cake is served.
✅Protests, street marches & rallies are held. Health clinics & open days, as well as assemblies for screenings of documentary & relevant films.
✅Workplaces, educational institutions and places of worship host guest speakers, collect donations for charities & partner with service providers.
✅Pop-up public works of art regarding homelessness, a housing crisis, shelter, or poverty, are offered; significant photography is released.
✅Media coverage is of people working to prevent & end homelessness & alleviate the suffering of those experiencing it. While peak bodies, lead agencies, major charities, industry bodies & associations, unions, foundations & government departments feature in media coverage.
✅The voices of small charities & less powerful stakeholders are also amplified.
✅World Homeless Day helps to reveal the depth of suffering, opportunities to help alleviate suffering, changes to policy that can prevent homelessness before it happens, & a way forward to assist people currently experiencing homelessness.
BIG change in Australia: PM @AlboMP & Treasurer @JEChalmers & @AustralianLabor have introduced the most aggressive housing market interventions in decades, shifting policy significantly toward the decommodification of residential real estate
❓Decommodification means treating housing primarily as a social good & shelter rather than a financial investment asset
✅Congratulations to everyone involved in this long fought for policy change

How to increase or decrease homelessness:
Imagine a highway with onramps as ways into homelessness & offramps (escape routes) out of homelessness
✅Narrowing the onramps & widening the offramps are how you solve homelessness
✅Communities with wide open onramps will have a never-ending supply of people newly homeless
✅Communities with poor offramps will bottleneck & grow homelessness

The most fiscally conservative response to houselessness is housing:
✅It costs more to criminalise people experiencing homelessness than to house them, YES in the short term, but EVEN MORE expensive in the long term.
