50 years ago PC David Green, aged just 20, was fatally stabbed on duty.
David had been called to a disturbance outside a dance hall when he was attacked by a group of youths and stabbed by 20 year old Demond Wilson.
Wilson received life imprisonment for the callous attack
Today, with PC Greens family and ex colleagues present, we remembered his sacrifice with a service at Force Headquarters.
It may have been 50 years ago, but it is a stark reminder of the dangers police officers face each and every day.
PC David Green was the very best of us. He ran towards danger, namely a youth with a knife, where most would run away.
Despite his short service, he was conmended on a number of occasions. He is a fine example of British policing.
'momento eorum'
50 years ago, tomorrow, a young 20 year old PC Green took to the streets to serve the people of Birmingham. He never made it home.
Fatally stabbed and killed, doing his duty. Tomorrow, we honour that sacrifice with a short service showing his sacrifice is not forgotten.
Tonight, we have had the honour of carrying out a salute during Elgar's 'Nimrod' at the truly magnificent @policeorchestra Proms night. A truly fantastic event we love supporting.
Tomorrow we will commemorate all UK #police officers who have died on duty and pay tribute to lives lost in air disasters - more on the service and candle lighters here https://t.co/6PF6TRGd2u
A very warm welcome to Dr Derrick Anderson CBE DL, HM Lord Lieutenant of West Midlands as you take on your new role. We look forward to seeing you soon.
When a colleague dies in service, we fly a Union Flag from the officers last parade station. We then present it to their family at the funeral service. Marking their service to the Crown.
Tonight was rather special as colleagues watched on as a flag was sadly lowered.
Today, we attend @UK_COPS Service of Remembrance.
This year is even more personal as the name of our own @WMPolice officer Sgt. Paul Freer is read out during the service.
Certain things were just made better 50 years ago.. or at least easier to source.
