My new post about the life of C.E. Scoggins, a backup tackle on the 1906 Texas Longhorns football team who went on to a celebrated career as an adventure novelist and had two of his stories adapted into movies, one of which starred John Wayne.

Roy Baines, a Longhorn center of the late 1930s, was born 110 years ago tomorrow. He was the first @TexasFootball letterman from Odessa and made the play of his career in the final seconds of his last game to beat Texas A&M. My new post on his life here:

FUN FACT: The first University of Texas varsity football team played its first game on Thanksgiving Day 1893 vs. the Dallas Athletic Club. George Merewether, a 32-year-old mail-carrier who played fullback for the Dallas team, was the first player to score a touchdown vs. Texas.
For #NationalPostalWorkerDay, I wrote about six @TexasFootball lettermen who worked with the postal service, including four who served as postmaster for their hometown.

Dusty May already having an influence in Dallas!
Talked to a half-dozen college coaches today to get NBA draft thoughts. Asked them for their favorite first-round pick outside of the top four and the point guard tier - more than half said Morez Johnson. He's got a lot of fans.
@neoavatara The NBA regular season ends a week after the NCAA tournament does, and well after the signing days for HS recruits. The Mavs didn't part ways with Jason Kidd until May 19. The timing is never ideal for these moves, but UM fans can go cry about it while hugging their trophy.
@brocknshock@CaitlinPacific The late Peter Huber wrote a @CityJournal essay 17 years ago pointing out that the U.S. controls neither the global supply nor demand for fossil fuels and has no power to stop China or India from building as many coal plants as they desire. https://t.co/MPRDWOAFpH
OTD in 1928, Sam Levi Wolfe, a tackle on the Texas Longhorn football team of 1910, died while trying to save two young girls from drowning in the San Saba River. One girl survived, the other drowned with him. He was posthumously awarded a Carnegie Medal for his bravery.
@giveashitnature@JonahDispatch I can’t see a reference to the black-capped chickadee without recalling Rocky and Bullwinkle going bird watching. Relevant part starts at 2:32.

With former Texas Longhorn WR Collin Johnson enrolling at @MITSloan, I was reminded of several @TexasFootball lettermen who spent time as students at other elite universities, one of whom was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. Click to read my post on that topic:

Congrats to former Texas Longhorn WR Collin Johnson, who will pursue an MBA at @MITSloan after retiring from the NFL. Soon I’ll have a post on several @TexasFootball lettermen who were also students at other elite universities, including over a dozen Ivy Leaguers.
I’m grateful to share that I’ll be enrolling at MIT Sloan this fall to pursue my MBA.
At the same time, I’ve made the decision to retire from the NFL.
Football has shaped my life in more ways than I can put into words. It taught me faith, discipline, resilience, leadership, and how to compete at the highest level. I’m thankful for every teammate, coach, organization, and person who helped me along the way.
As I move into this next chapter, I’m excited to continue building Beyond-Sports by launching Founders Academy in partnership with MITdesignX — a venture-building program created for current and former professional athletes building real businesses.
For a long time, athletes have been seen as endorsers of other people’s companies.
I believe we can be the founders, operators, investors, and owners behind them too.
Grateful for the game. Excited for what’s next.
@RobertMSterling Is there a high school of decent size anywhere in the country whose library doesn't have most of these books? Pretty sure 6 or 7 of them were assigned by at least one English teacher at my Texas HS in the late 90s/early 2000s.
@cknight111@gordonkeith@junior_miller Had to go back and replay on the @SportsDayDFW app to make sure I heard that right. Sure enough @gordonkeith said Bono was 62 today instead of 66. Shouldn't Junes know by now that all of U2's members were born in 1960 and 1961?
