이번 화보를 문자대로 펼쳐보자면 그건 엔하이픈 멤버 각자의 타고난 태도와 미래를 향한 에너지일 것이다. 성훈의 해석은 꽤 의외였다.

"물병을 두 줄로 주르륵 세워 놓고 한 명은 앞에서부터 병을 가져오고, 한 명은 뒤에서부터 가져오는 릴스 보셨나요? 처음엔 앞에서 시작한 친구가 앞서는데, 결국 뒤에서 출발한 친구가 이기더라고요. 비록 시작이 느릴지라도 그 사이 균형을 잘 잡아가면, 결국엔 이긴다는 사실을 알고 있어요. 어린 시절 점프 훈련할 때, 처음에 느려도 나중에는 제가 따라잡았거든요."

데뷔 전 피겨스케이팅 선수로 활동했던 경험은 성훈에게 남다른 깨달음을 선사했다. 성훈은 그걸 '꾸준함'이라고 했다. 여기에 일말의 불안 따윈 없다.

"뭘 어떻게 해. 그냥 하는 거지." 라는 어느 유명한 피겨 선수의 명언처럼, "무언가를 시작할 때 겁을 먹거나, 생각이 많아지는 순간이 있잖아요. 그럴 땐 일부러 김연아 선수의 마인드를 가지려고도 했던 것 같아요. 이제는 저만의 방식이 몸에 배었달까요? 아무리 시간이 오래 걸려도, 설사 남들보다 느릴지라도 확실히 끝내고 다음 단계로 넘어가려고 해요. 그게 저만의 완벽을 찾아가는 방식이에요."

물론 처음부터 그랬던 건 아니다. "어렸을 땐 남의 눈치를 많이 보는 성격이었어요. 그런 제 자신이 싫었어요. 수업 시간엔 발표도 힘들어 했죠. 부모님께선 그런 제가 운동을 통해 사회성을 기르길 바라셨어요. 실제로 운동을 하면서 많은 부분이 달라졌어요. 말하자면, 경기도 일종의 무대니까요." 그 시절 피겨 선수 성훈의 경기를 한 번이라도 본 적 있다면 이해할 것이다. 선수로 지낸 10년 동안 각종 연예기획사에서 캐스팅이 쇄도했다.

"설사 데뷔하지 못하더라도 연습생 경험은 어떤 식으로든 제게 도움이 될 거라 생각했어요." 그렇게 피겨 유망주는 아이돌 연습생으로 인생의 방향을 급선회했다. 다시, 적응기였다. "처음에는 카메라 앞에 서는 것도 무서웠어요. 그 앞에서 일부러 셀카 찍는 연습을 하곤 했죠. 계속하니까 익숙해졌고 어느 순간부터는 카메라가 편해졌어요. 계속하다 보니 잘하게 되었고 그때 알았죠. 아, 잘 맞는구나."

어색한 카메라를 피하는 대신 그 앞에서 셀카 연습을 했다는 성훈의 남다른 근성에서 비롯한 에피소드도 있다.

"제가 어릴 때 수줍음이 많다고 했잖아요. 그걸 이겨내기 위해서 일부러 이상한 행동을 하곤 했거든요. 저한텐 일종의 훈련이었어요. 성공한 건지, 지금은 남들 앞에서 웃기는 행동을 해도 별로 부끄럽지가 않아요. 지금도 멤버들 앞에서 갑자기 근육 포징을 보여주는 식이죠. 다들 재미있어 해요."

여기까지가 남들 앞에서 발표 한마디 못하던 수줍은 소년이 빙판 위의 피겨 선수로, 다시 무대 위 천생 아이돌로 성장한 이야기. 허나, 단 하나의 의문을 지울 수 없다. 관성에 관한 문제다. 잘하는 것을 하려고 하고, 보다 편한 길을 찾는 것이 인간의 본성이라면 성훈은 언제나 정반대의 선택을 한 셈이니까.

"환경이 바뀌면 불편하죠. 새로운 건 낯설고요. 그런데 그 순간을 버티면 재미있는 단계가 오잖아요." 성훈은 어떤 관문을 넘어서는 사람이다. "그렇다고 제가 도전 의식이 강한 것 같진 않아요." 담담한 표정으로 그가 덧붙였다. 성훈은 그저 무던하게 부딪히고 열심히 시도할 뿐이다. "저는 잘 모르겠는데 주변에서는 그렇게 말하더라고요." 그가 살짝 멋쩍다는 듯이 대꾸했다. 꾸준함은 성훈의 무기이고, 언제나 가장 비범한 자들의 것이었다.

그의 말처럼, 한번 적응하고 나니 신세계가 열렸다.

"운동할 때는 점수 싸움이라는 부담감이 컸던 것 같아요. 연습 땐 완벽했는데 긴장한 나머지 경기에서 어이없이 실수를 하는 경우가 많았어요. 지금은 그렇지 않아요. 그때 혼자였다면 지금은 팀이고요. 무대 위에서 멤버들과 긴장을 나눌 수 있고 누가 점수를 매기는 것도 아니죠. 마음이 편해지니까 점점 더 엔진에게 보여주고 싶은 게 많아져요."

지금의 성훈은 매 순간에 감사하다.

"일종의 습관인데, 힘든 기억은 머릿속에서 금방 지워버리거든요. 언제나 좋았던 순간이 먼저 기억나요." 그러더니 엔하이픈으로서 경험한 환희의 순간을 줄줄이 나열한다. "엔하이픈은 글로벌 서바이벌 프로그램 <I-LAND>로 데뷔했잖아요. 데뷔 때 정말 행복했죠. 시작이 남들보다 빨랐어요. 부스터를 얻고 하나하나 올라가는 성과를 볼 떄마다 기뻤고요. 나르시스트처럼 보일 수도 있지만 무대에서 조금씩 성장하는 제 자신을 보면서 뿌듯함도 느꼈죠. 무엇보다 작년엔 대상을 받았어요. 5년 동안 열심히 활동한 끝에 이렇게 큰 상을 받는구나, 감개무량했죠."

이 대목에서 성훈은 가장 환하게 웃었다. 여기까지 오느라 애썼다는 인정 같은 것이었을까? 2025 MAMA 어워즈 대상은 그에게 의미가 남달랐다.

"정말 열심히 투표해 주셨거든요. 엔진이 있어서 엔하이픈이 있다는 걸 다시 한번 느꼈죠. 엔하이픈으로서의 자부심도 커졌고요. 사실 데뷔한 해와 대상 받은 해의 엔하이픈을 비교하면 정말 많이 성장했어요. 데뷔 초반에는 활동을 하면서도 만족을 못했던 것 같아요. 주변에서 멋있다고 해주셔도 뭐가 멋있는지 잘 몰랐죠. 이제는 남들이 우리를 어떻게 볼지 걱정하지 않고 우리 자신을 믿고 가고 싶어요. 아직은 가장 우리다운 게 무엇인지 찾아가는 여정이에요. 분명한 건, 그때보단 눈이 밝아졌다는 거예요."

성훈은 이제 다시 새로운 관문 앞에 서 있다. 자신감은 충만하다. 얼마 전 6명이 함께한 첫 번째 무대 '안녕, 멜버른' 뮤직 페스티벌에서 확신했다.

"준비하면서 걱정이 많았거든요. 연습 시간이 워낙 짧았어요. 그런데 무대를 마치고 멤버들 모두 같은 생각을 했더라고요. 아, 열심히 준비하면 전보다 더 좋은 무대를 보여줄 수 있겠구나. 6명이 정확하게 단 하나의 목표를 보고 나아가는 느낌이 들어서 요즘엔 걱정이 하나도 없어요. 우리만 잘하면 될 것 같아요. 그렇게 올해 연말엔 한 단계 더 성장한 우리를 마주하고 싶어요."

어떤 관문을 넘어서는 사람, 성훈은 잘 해낼 것이다.

Imagine looking someone dead in the face while they tell you exactly how they feel, only for you to turn around and insist you know their thoughts better than they do. That isn’t support. That is arrogance. That is entitlement.

The truth hurts. You were told those chants caused division. You were told they distracted the members during concerts. You were told the members did not want them. But if your first instinct is to invent another conspiracy and cling to #hopium, then you never cared about listening in the first place. You only cared about protecting your own narrative and getting validation, which, by the way, you will never get from ENHYPEN, no matter how much you bleed yourselves dry trying to force them to acknowledge you.

Stop acting like you know ENHYPEN better than ENHYPEN knows themselves. Your fantasy does not outrank their own words. Your ‘hopium’ does not erase reality. Your tarot readings will never override what the members themselves have already said. All you’re doing is making a mockery of tarot readers and embarrassing yourselves in the process.

The hardest pill to swallow is that the members do not owe you a reality that matches your expectations. They are not responsible for maintaining the version of ENHYPEN that exists only in your head. If hearing it directly from them still isn’t enough, then nothing ever will be.

At that point, you’re not following ENHYPEN. You’re following a fantasy, feeding a grand delusion, and demanding that six real people live inside it.

Stop. Just stop. Reflect on the damage and disrespect you’ve caused, not only to the members but also to ENGENES who simply wanted to enjoy the concerts without unnecessary drama.

If you still choose to ignore everything they said after today, then stop pretending you’re doing this for ENHYPEN. You’re doing it for yourselves, for your own ego, and for whatever narrative you’ve become so desperate to protect. It was never about them. It was always about you and your agenda.

The irony is that you seem perfectly capable of letting other stages happen without making any disruptions and disrespect. You can’t even do your OT7 fanchant on someone else’s stage. But when it comes to ENHYPEN, you choose disruption over respect, despite fanbases continuously reminding you and even pleading with you to stop. That alone says everything.

You may also leave the fandom now and stop pretending you’re fighting for the six members when it’s painfully obvious that you are not. The door is wide open. You don’t need to announce your departure. Just go. No one will even care.
