[I Want You to Know How I Create My Photos]
I wanted the studio to look like an underwater world,
so I built this set inside my studio.
I bought a large quantity of smoke trees and painted them white.
The green, tentacle-like elements are young willow branches—I removed the leaves.
I dyed some air plants slightly and let them hang down,
and used a large amount of ferns to make them look like seaweed.
I also arranged a large number of fresh flowers with a little creative touch.
The driftwood the model is standing on is a massive piece that’s been polished to a high shine;
it weighs nearly 200 kg.
I set up a bubble machine overhead to create bubbles,
and added smoke to the top light to create a blue haze.
The costume is an original piece created by Ms. Okawa.
It’s one-of-a-kind. She crafted it specifically to meet my requests.
It’s not available for sale to the general public.
I’ve attached fishing line to the edges of the costume to pull it into shape.
Small strobes fitted with color filters are hidden in various places inside the costume, such as on the back. That’s why the costume appears to glow brightly and the background looks like the ocean.
The accessories were custom-made by MaryWest to match the concept.
The model is from a Tokyo modeling agency; we pay her travel expenses and a fee to come here.
I share the mermaid concept with the model in advance so she can visualize it.
I’ve asked Yeni to handle the hair and makeup. I shared the concept Ellie created previously with her, and Yeni adapted it accordingly.
I shoot while lying down myself, using a wide-angle lens to expand the sense of scale.
I also attach a filter to the lens.
I set up this entire set by myself.
Once the shoot is over, I take it all apart.
A one-of-a-kind, original world.
This world no longer exists in this reality.
I don’t rent it out either.
After it’s taken down,
it exists only within the photograph.
It’s a world all my own.
To create a single piece of work, I make various arrangements and preparations,
and everything comes together to form a single image.
I shoot with more passion than anyone else in Japan—no, in the whole world!
That’s the mindset I have when I press the shutter.
Yesterday, I had a meeting with icon, and it got me thinking.
I want everyone to know what I’m doing.
I’ll continue to share details about my work, so I’d be happy if you’d follow my ARTSY account.
