This Fourth of July I am reminded of Frederick Douglass' profound question. What does the Fourth of July mean to the Negro? We declared as a nation that all men are created equal, that we are endowed with certain inalienable rights, among them life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That promise was not written for some of us. It was written for ALL of us.
I am deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Martha Zoller.
Martha was a trailblazer in journalism and a truly authentic voice in the community. Her impact will not be forgotten and her absence will be felt throughout Georgia.
My prayers are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Two brothers from Richmond were the first in their family to go to college, and they both became doctors. Now Drs. Travan and Travis Jasper are home, leading the emergency room at the hospital that serves the same community that raised them. Think about the child in Richmond who walks into that ER and sees these two men running it. That child just saw their own future. Congratulations, Doctors. Keep leading. We are proud of you.

With profound sorrow & deep respect, we honor the life and legacy of Lawrence N. Brooks, who passed away at the remarkable age of 112. As the oldest living ‘American World War II Veteran’ at the time of his passing, represents one of the final living links to this generation.
41-year-old Jonathan Pettigrew, a devoted dad from the Bronx who had recently gained full custody of his young daughter and was working hard to provide for his seven children, was fatally shot on a BX36 bus on Monday, June 8, 2026.
Police say Pettigrew politely asked another passenger, reportedly a teenager to stop talking so loudly on his phone. The argument escalated, and the suspect pulled out a gun and shot him in the abdomen. Pettigrew was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No arrests have been made. The suspect is described as a young male, possibly in his teens.
This is yet another heartbreaking example of how quickly a simple request for respect on public transit can turn deadly. Jonathan was trying to get home after work just doing what any father would do.
Rest in peace, Jonathan Pettigrew. You didn’t deserve this. 🕊️
The NBA family honors the life and legacy of Dr. Clarence B. Jones, who passed away last month. A trusted advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his words helped move a nation forward. He didn’t just witness history, he helped write it. His legacy continues to guide and inspire us, on the court and far beyond it.
Three years ago today, Ajike “AJ” Owens was killed by a neighbor’s bullet while standing outside a locked door, unarmed, with her child beside her. While a conviction brought some measure of accountability, her family continues to carry a lifetime of loss. We remember not only the life AJ lost, but also the future her four children were robbed of with their mother. Our hearts are with them. Rest in Power.
Stunning video shows an ultra rare phenomenon of iridescent clouds, which appears when sunlight interacts with lingering raindrops in the air after it rains.
Your ancestors survived slavery, survived oppression, survived conditions you couldn't even imagine. You're out here doubting yourself over a business, over a setback.
This country exists because of what your bloodline built and endured. They didn't have a choice.
