"Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" was composed in 1897, NOT during the slave trade. It was originally intended to be a school anthem. It was first sung in public in 1899 at the ordination of Reverend Mboweni, who was the first Tsonga Methodist minister. Later, the Xhosa poet Samuel Mqhayi wrote a further seven verses. The hymn was made popular by the Ohlange Choir and later adopted as an anthem by ANC.

"Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" is not originally South African national anthem.

It was adopted in 1997.

That song belongs to all Africans. It was a liberation song composed by Enoch Sontoga in 1897 for all Africans during slave trade era.

It's Africa's national anthem.
