Across Gauteng, the smell is likely hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) pollution, possibly linked to Sasol’s Secunda plant, reaching Joburg due to current wind conditions.

Gauteng’s water system is red-lining.

This week the three metros drew 3 589 megalitres/day (ML/d) - the 4th-highest week in the past 12 months and higher than last Oct/Nov peaks that led to outages.

This isn’t just about taps left running; it’s about municipal maintenance failure and soaring Non-Revenue Water (NRW) — water pumped but never billed because of leaks, bursts, illegal connections and broken metering.

Tshwane’s losses are growing; Joburg’s remain very high. With Rand Water’s reservoir storage around 40% (below the 60% safety level), the network has little recovery buffer.

What municipalities must do now (30-day emergency NRW plan):
• Leak-repair & night-time pressure management blitzes in worst zones
• Meter audits and rapid replacements to stop silent losses
• Clear repair SLAs for bursts/leaks and daily crews on rotation
• District metering & night-flow tracking to pinpoint losses
• Weekly public dashboards: leaks fixed, bursts, night-flow trends, NRW

Residents can help by reporting leaks - but the heavy lift sits with cities.

At 3 589 ML/d and around 40% storage, we are weeks, not months, from another round of outages unless municipalities act now.
