Underrated skill for assistant coaches: Be low-maintenance, high-impact.
Bring solutions, not problems.
Be where your feet are.
Handle your role like it’s the most important on staff.
No ego. No drama. Just relentless value.
Great assistants make the whole program better.
It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Bjorn Dragsbaek. Former president of Franklin Youth Soccer Association - FYSA. Bjorn had dedicated 18 years to coaching, volunteering and leadership in youth soccer and his passing is a significant loss to Franklin and the wider youth soccer communities.

Moments like this are what youth sports should be about: fun, connection, and even a little humor. Love seeing coaches #TakeBackSports, ease the pressure, and remind kids it’s just a game.

Being an athlete isn’t a requirement. If you choose it, there will be many disappointments, injuries & sacrifices. If all you want is wins & trophies, don’t bother. You’ll experience more letdowns than you ever will wins. But you’ll also learn more than you ever thought possible!
As a parent, don't try to live out your dreams through your children. Allow them to live their own lives and help them become well-rounded adults. Do what's truly best for their future development and well-being.

7 Reasons HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS Are the Best
As we kick off 2025, let’s take a moment to appreciate why high school sports are simply the BEST.
These experiences are one-of-a-kind, unforgettable, and create memories that stick with us forever.
Here are 7 reasons they mean so much:
1. PLAY WITH CHILDHOOD FRIENDS 🤝
- Small towns, small schools.
- No recruits, no transfers.
- Just kids who’ve grown up together since 2nd grade.
- Like brothers or sisters, the bond is unmatched.
2. RIVALRY GAMES 🏀
- Nothing beats the intensity of high school rivalries.
- A close game.
- Bragging rights are on the line.
- It’s what makes the season electric.
3. STUDENT SECTIONS 📣
- Your friends cheering their hearts out.
- School spirit alive and thriving.
- A packed gym or stadium shaking with noise.
- Nothing compares.
4. THE PEP BAND 🥁
- Classmates playing their hearts out.
- Loud, proud, and adding to the crazy atmosphere.
- It’s pure magic.
5. PLAY FOR FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY 🏟️
- Fans in the stands, rooting for you.
- Brings the school and community together.
- A shared experience that builds lifelong connections.
6. PURE JOY AND PASSION ⭐
- The energy, passion, and pure joy of the game.
- Authentic, raw, and unforgettable.
- One of the greatest feelings you’ll ever have.
7. MEMORIES FOR A LIFETIME 🕰️
- These moments will stay with you forever.
- When you look back on your high school years, these memories will be some of the best!

Here’s to another year of watching our kids grow, struggle, rise, stumble, discover who they are, and chase something they love. Being in the front row for all of it is a privilege.
Every year, I look backward before I look forward. The lessons of 2024 guide my 2025. So here's what I know for sure: I still have a lot to work on. I also discovered something else, I could finally take a few long-standing, tough-to-overcome, not-so-pleasant things off this list.
I am a work in progress. I want to be the best sports parent I can be for my daughters, so I keep working. I continue to learn, grow, and practice. So here's to it, 2025, LET'S GO!

The amount of mini-adult training programs on social media is astounding...
Just an FYI: Kids have little desire to do:
planks
split squats
weighted carries
They literally have the rest of their lives to exercise. The pre-adolescent years should be dedicated to developing agility, balance, coordination, and body awareness in a dynamic and engaging environment.
It's important that children have positive movement experiences early in life so that have a desire to continue to move as they get older.

Parents -
If you want to see your child have a better chance for more playing time, then please focus more on teaching them the soft skills (handling adversity, humility, respect, work ethic, unselfishness).
AMAZING MOMENT FOR THE GREAT STATE OF VERMONT as the University of Vermont wins the 1st NCAA men's soccer national championship in program history. And on a golden goal, no less. Have an absolute week, Catamount Nation 💛💚🏆
For the life of me I do not understand the select/club sports mindset.
Why are we paying thousands of dollars to join clubs so kids can play on the bronze team, to travel to Topeka, to play another bronze team, to go 1-3, stay in a hotel, eat crappy food, while mom and dad bring the younger siblings along, just so they can end up fighting over who forgot to pack snacks for the kids.
How about, you save the money, spend time with the family doing something fun, productive or educational, and play school or Rec ball.
Your kid isn’t going to college on a scholarship or going to the Olympics. Most won’t even be playing the sport they are in after their sophomore year of high school.
Just say no. You will thank me later.
⁉️Why are you spending every free minute driving or in gyms and on fields? Why are you spending thousands of dollars on team fees, equipment, and personal training? Why are you pushing your child so hard that they are stressed out and there is friction between you?
🎯If you aren't grounded in your WHY, it's easy to become angry, resentful, and full of fear and FOMO. Spend time really thinking about your WHYs.
🔑Here are some good ones to get you started:
-They love playing
-They are learning valuable life skills
-You love watching them play
-You love the time you spend together
🙌🏼Once you grasp your WHY, youth sports will become much more enjoyable for you and your child.
