Ira Remsen was the first chemistry professor at Hopkins and the university's second president. His legacy on campus was cemented in 1927 when the new chemistry building was named in his honor, and his ashes were interred behind a plaque shortly after the building's opening.

Yesterday, Dr. Adrienne Israel spoke on campus about her experiences with interviewing Ghanaian soldiers and teaching African and Africana Studies at Guilford College. Dr. Israel is also the first Black woman to receive a Ph.D. in History at JHU.
