We are deeply saddened by the passing of Marjane Satrapi, the acclaimed Franco-Iranian artist, filmmaker, and author of the internationally celebrated graphic novel Persepolis who died at the age of 56.
Marjane Satrapi was a fearless voice for feminism, human rights, and freedom. Through her work and public engagement, she consistently advocated for women’s rights, standing in solidarity with the people of Iran and amplifying the message of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement on the global stage.
According to a statement from her family, Marjane Satrapi “died of sadness” a little more than a year after the passing of her husband, Mattias Ripa, a producer, actor, and screenwriter, who died on April 8, 2025.
Marjane Satrapi leaves behind a powerful cultural, artistic, and moral legacy. Her courage will continue to resonate far beyond her lifetime.

Keep humanizing these human beings, who are doing their best to live their lives, build a family, and be part of a community.
They're not "aliens." They're not "it." They're not "other." WE ARE US. We are all living beings surviving on the same planet, our only planet.
Because of your voice on Delaney Hall, the Trump admin just released 18 yr old high school senior whose story I told. They released the pregnant women held inside. These releases show ICE isn’t targeting the violent criminals. ICE is feeling the pressure. Keep raising your voice.
I am thinking exactly the same thing.
Been watching 60 Minutes every Sunday since it first aired. It's the longest, most successful news show ever and hugely profitable.
PBS-Frontline already has the new chops, talent, and respect to carry that torch well.
I truly wish @PBS would hire the team that @60Minutes has fired, including those-soon-to-leave Scott Pelley etc. and create their own version of this iconic program. Ratings would be huge.
Good will would be even larger.

This article says climate change is “believed to have played a role” in the UK's extreme heat this week.
As a climate scientist, let me fact-check that.
First, climate change is not a religion. No belief is required. It is about evidence.
And the evidence has been crystal clear for more than two decades: climate change is making heat waves hotter, longer, more frequent and more dangerous.
In fact, science has advanced far beyond saying climate change merely “played a role.” Today, we can quantify how much more likely and how much hotter climate change made a specific event.
Here's the bottom line:
Climate is changing. Humans are responsible. And we are experiencing the impacts now. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that solutions already exist, and the majority of people care - 89%, around the world!
But meaningful action depends on helping people understand not just what is happening: we need to know how it affects our lives (this heat wave being example A today) and what we can do about it.
That’s the opportunity this reporting missed.

I saw chaos inside and outside of the ICE detention center Delaney Hall today. Detainees protesting the lack of due process, the disgusting food and poor treatment while their families and advocates stood outside calling for help. Instead of engaging with me and others about the poor conditions, ICE sent in an armored vehicle and a line of armed agents that only poured gasoline on the fire. Civilians were tackled and restrained, and agents fired pepper balls and spray into the crowd. This is more of the same lawlessness we’ve seen elsewhere around the country. Our country deserves accountability. Our country deserves the humane treatment of every person here. In fact, our Constitution demands this. What I witnessed and experienced today was shameful. Delaney Hall is a failure; it’s this administration’s failure. The only way to make this right for our communities is to shut it down and make sure the failures we’ve seen never happen again.
The scariest part, to me, is the absence of guardrails—a president who is eager to deregulate everything and to solicit and accept pay-to-play deals.
He is also utterly heedless and mindless of safeguarding our future, our planet, our society.
ALL 5 HAVE COME TRUE:
1. Hallucinations are an unsolvable problem. They fool users AND devs, with confidence.
2. AI models absorb bias and amplify it in hiring, healthcare, lending, criminal justice.
3. Environmental costs are now larger in scale than small nations. ->
4. Audits of training data remain impossible— AI devs can't know everything that's in the data sets, including child porn.
5. AIs are training on AIs data, a feedback loop that centralizes power in hands of giant co's. "Model collapse" ensues.
#AI Please DO READ the full post.
Every year, I share this video of French caretakers who take sand from Omaha Beach in Normandy, and scrub them into the letters to give them the gold coloring.
They do this for all 9,386 US soldiers who died.
France also gave us this land as American soil. #MemorialDayWeekend
