I don't know if people understand just how insanely egregious this is.

First of all, 1) not only are NATO spending targets NOT legally binding (nothing in any NATO-related legal text mandates a specific GDP-based threshold for defense spending), but on top of this 2) Spain requested AND RECEIVED an exemption from the 5% target at the 2025 Hague Summit - NATO changed the declaration's language specifically to allow Spain to sign while publicly declaring it would not comply (https://t.co/q3VE2Je3TS)

This means that, legally speaking and according to NATO's own rules, Spain is doubly within its rights: there is no binding obligation to begin with, and Spain was excused from even this non-binding obligation.

That's the first point: Germany's chancellor just endorsed - from the Oval Office - the U.S. punishing a fellow EU nation for refusing to comply with an obligation that doesn't exist in law, under a political pledge Spain was excused from at a NATO summit.

The second point is that this 5% target has nothing to do with "defense", quite the contrary in fact: it is pretty explicitly an imperial tribute to the U.S. that will actually **weaken** European defense.

That's the insane thing about EU defense spending: in recent years, the more it has spent on defense, the more that spending has flowed to American contractors as opposed to European ones, making the EU defense industry weaker (https://t.co/XHGLW71tX0). Increasing spending to 5% doesn't strengthen European defense: it accelerates exactly this transfer.

All the more insane given the well-documented production backlogs in the U.S. defense industry and its inability to produce at scale: US defense analysts - including from Trump-adjacent think tanks like AEI (https://t.co/c3DobMYpru) - openly acknowledge that European customers would be deprioritized behind U.S. ones in any real conflict.

AND, critically, a defense industry from a country that's increasingly hostile to Europe - explicitly so in its National Security Strategy - and whose weaponry has "kill switches" that allows for remote disabling.

I mean, the sheer madness of it: anyone with an ounce of common sense can see that DOUBLING your defense spending to enrich a foreign arms industry that has kill switches on your weapons, can't meet its own military's needs, and increasingly treats you as an adversary, is not even remotely a defense strategy - it's suicide.

That's why having Merz - in the oval office, sitting next to Trump - endorse economic coercion against the one EU country that's still sane enough to see through this madness is so egregious, and frankly straight-up traitorous.

For those who know Asterix and Obelix, Spain is the "one small village still holding out against the invaders" and Merz is Cassius Ceramix, the self-described "gallo-roman" Gaul village chief who's the incarnation of all sycophants after his tribe were conquered by the Romans.

I'm with Asterix, and all Europeans should be too.

En esa etapa de “reconciliación” posterior a la guerra civil, mi abuelo, por ejemplo, se pasó 3 años en prisión, de 1939 a 1942. Recibía una paliza a la semana y una ducha desnudo a base de manguerazos de agua fría en el patio de la cárcel, en el crudo invierno de Valladolid. Mi abuela recogía cada semana una muda ensangrentada y le llevaba una limpia. A pesar de eso, mi abuelo tuvo mucha suerte. Un amigo le salvó del fusilamiento cuando lo llevaban en un camión a las tapias de San Isidro, sin juicio previo ni sentencia. Era lo que llamaban “el paseíllo”. Le salvó que era muy religioso y es lo que ese amigo desveló a los que iban a ejecutarle para que le perdonaran. Le bajaron del camión y le conmutaron la ejecución por cárcel. El era funcionario del @AyuntamientoVLL . Su único crimen fue ser un hombre de izquierdas, aunque nunca tuvo un cargo público, ni se dedicó a la política. Al salir de la cárcel se quedó en la calle. Perdió su condición de funcionario de carrera y tuvo que buscarse las lentejas como pudo, viviendo una vida de miseria y privaciones. Murió en 1968 a los 57 años, cojo de las palizas que recibió y con el cuerpo desecho.
No hubo ninguna reconciliación tras la guerra civil. Solo la imposición de algunos de sus ideas por la fuerza. Son los mismos, los herederos políticos y biológicos de esas atrocidades los que quieren repetir esos años tan “gloriosos”. Conmigo harían lo mismo que hicieron con mi abuelo si pudieran. Basta escuchar sus discursos de odio. Son fascistas y no tienen el menor empeño en disimularlo. Que no te engañen. El fascismo es lo peor que le ha pasado a la humanidad y a España. Por eso con esta gente ni a coger duros.

I cannot believe the truly demonic scenes captured in this video. Blindfolded detainees are released and made to run whilst they are sniped from behind by Israeli forces presumably for ‘sport’. Where have we seen this sort of evil before? It is utterly inhuman.

Namibia rejects Germany’s Support of the Genocidal Intent of the Racist Israeli State against Innocent Civilians in Gaza

On Namibian soil, #Germany committed the first genocide of the 20th century in 1904-1908, in which tens of thousands of innocent Namibians died in the most inhumane and brutal conditions. The German Government is yet to fully atone for the genocide it committed on Namibian soil. Therefore, in light of Germany’s inability to draw lessons from its horrific history, President @hagegeingob expresses deep concern with the shocking decision communicated by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany yesterday, 12 January 2024, in which it rejected the morally upright indictment brought forward by South Africa before the #InternationalCourtofJustice that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in #Gaza.

Worryingly, ignoring the violent deaths of over 23 000 Palestinians in Gaza and various United Nations reports disturbingly highlighting the internal displacement of 85% of civilians in Gaza amid acute shortages of food and essential services, the German Government has chosen to defend in the International Court of Justice the genocidal and gruesome acts of the Israeli Government against innocent civilians in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Germany cannot morally express commitment to the United Nations Convention against genocide, including atonement for the genocide in Namibia, whilst supporting the equivalent of a holocaust and genocide in Gaza. Various international organizations, such as Human Rights Watch have chillingly concluded that Israel is committing war crimes in Gaza.

President Geingob reiterates his call made on 31 December 2023, “No peace-loving human being can ignore the carnage waged against Palestinians in Gaza”. In that vein, President Geingob appeals to the German Government to reconsider its untimely decision to intervene as a third-party in defence and support of the genocidal acts of Israel before the International Court of Justice.
