Civics classes are a start, but democracy ultimately depends on a cultural expectation that citizens take active responsibility for their government.

That means sustained civic education, a healthier information environment, and social norms that treat civic awareness as a duty rather than a hobby.

Because democracy doesn’t fail simply because people disagree, it fails when citizens are too dumb to maintain it.

BREAKING: The CIA blew the whistle on Dan Crenshaw’s drunken, crude, international meltdown — and Republicans are still covering for him.

In a bombshell that’s got Capitol Hill buzzing like a malfunctioning snow machine at Mar-a-Lago, Punchbowl News is reporting that CIA officials in Mexico City had to send an actual cable to Langley alerting HQ that Rep. Dan Crenshaw — yes, the GOP’s supposed “national security expert” — was behaving like a frat bro on spring break instead of a member of Congress representing the United States abroad.

Multiple administration, intel, and Hill sources say Crenshaw’s behavior during an August congressional delegation meeting was so unprofessional, so linked to drinking, and so shockingly crude that it made women in the room uncomfortable — and left the CIA wondering what on earth was wrong with him. That’s right: the CIA, an agency that has seen everything from coups to covert ops, took one look at Dan Crenshaw and said, “We need to tell someone about this.”

Crenshaw was in Mexico as part of his now-defunct role chairing the House Intelligence Committee’s cartel task force — a role he conveniently no longer holds. Turns out, the person tasked with investigating cartel behavior was allegedly acting more out of control than the criminals he’s supposed to be monitoring.

As we previously reported, sources say Crenshaw joined a toast and unleashed a blast of crude language that stunned the room and alarmed U.S. officials. One woman present said the tone and vulgarity were “jarring and deeply inappropriate.” Apparently. the CIA agreed — enough to put it in writing.

And while House Intelligence Chair Rick Crawford wanted him removed from the committee entirely, Speaker Mike Johnson swooped in to protect yet another scandal-ridden Republican. The result? Crenshaw is banned from taxpayer-funded congressional travel for 90 days and forced to surrender his cartel task force position — but still inexplicably retains his subcommittee gavel overseeing defense intelligence.

That’s right: a man flagged by the CIA for behavior beneath the standards of a junior diplomat still holds authority over America’s intelligence apparatus.
Crenshaw, in classic GOP fashion, brushed the whole scandal off as a “pathetic political hit job,” claiming that anyone shocked by his crude conduct “has never spent more than five minutes around the military.” Funny, because none of the other veterans in Congress seem to be generating CIA cables over their behavior abroad.

And then — because the House GOP is now a fully operational hypocrisy machine — Speaker Johnson publicly embraced him, releasing a statement dripping with reverence about Crenshaw’s “expertise,” “platform,” and “invaluable insights,” as if nothing happened. Crenshaw proudly amplified the praise on social media within minutes.

So let’s sum this up:
A Republican member of Congress got so out of control during an international diplomatic meeting that CIA officers felt the need to raise the alarm. He made women uncomfortable, embarrassed the U.S. delegation, got banned from official travel by his own party, lost a leadership position — and the Speaker of the House is still protecting him.

This is what today’s GOP calls “national security leadership.” And they wonder why America’s allies are nervous.
