La Iglesia Católica celebra cada 24 de julio a San Chárbel Makhlouf, un sacerdote, monje y ermitaño del rito maronita que además es conocido por obtener milagros de Dios no sólo para los católicos, sino también para musulmanes y fieles de otras religiones. Por ello les compartimos una lista de 9 cosas que tal vez no sabías sobre este santo.

Su nombre original era Joseph Antoun Makhlouf. Nació en 1828 en el pueblo libanés de Beqa-Kafra. Fue el más joven de cinco hermanos y sus padres eran sencillos y devotos agricultores maronitas.

1. Es el primer santo del Líbano
Chárbel fue beatificado el 5 de diciembre de 1965 y canonizado el 9 de octubre de 1977, convirtiéndose en el primer santo del Líbano y el primer santo oriental canonizado desde el siglo XIII.
El Papa San Pablo VI comentó en la ceremonia de beatificación: “¡Qué símbolo de unión entre Oriente y Occidente! Toda su existencia se centró completamente en la celebración de la Misa, en la oración silenciosa ante el Santísimo Sacramento y en la práctica heroica de las virtudes de la obediencia, pobreza y castidad”.

2. Buscaba la santidad desde niño
Se cuenta que el anhelo de Joseph era la santidad. Incluso cuando era niño se iba solo a una gruta y rezaba. Creció con el ejemplo de dos de sus tíos, ambos ermitaños.

3. El nombre Chárbel está inspirado en un santo de la iglesia primitiva
A la edad de 23 años viajó más de un día a pie hasta llegar al Monasterio de Nuestra Señora del Líbano, donde comenzó su noviciado. Cuando se unió a la orden de los monjes maronitas libaneses en el Monasterio de San Marón en Annaya, eligió el nombre de Chárbel en honor a un mártir del siglo II.

4. Fue eremita y asceta
El santo vivió durante 19 años en el Monasterio de San Marón, muy dedicado a la oración, penitencia, trabajo manual y silencio contemplativo. También vivió un ascetismo riguroso y una profunda unión con Dios durante los últimos 23 años de su vida en una ermita.
La única perturbación que tenía era la gran cantidad de visitantes que llegaban atraídos por su reputación de santidad, para buscar consejo, la promesa de oración o su intercesión para obtener algún milagro.

5. Sufrió una parálisis que le causó la muerte
En 1898, el P. Chárbel sufrió una hemiplejía (parálisis en un lado del cuerpo) mientras celebraba Misa. Murió ocho días después, en la víspera de Navidad, a la edad de 70 años.

6. Su cuerpo fue hallado incorrupto
Se cuenta que, tras su muerte, apareció una luz deslumbrante alrededor de su tumba. Cuando ésta se abrió cuatro meses después, el cuerpo del ermitaño estaba incorrupto, secretando sangre y sudor. Su cuerpo continuó sangrando durante muchos años, y a veces la sustancia incluso brotaba de las paredes de su tumba.

7. Vivió como ermitaño, pero fue muy popular tras su muerte
El humilde ermitaño que sólo sabía rezar, guardar silencio, obedecer y hacer penitencia, se hizo conocido en todo el mundo. Para 1952, el Monasterio de San Marón había recibido 130.000 cartas de 95 países, algunas pidiendo cualquier objeto que hubiera estado en contacto con el santo monje y otras expresando gratitud por los favores recibidos.
Además, la tumba de San Chárbel recibe alrededor de 4 millones de visitantes al año, incluidos cristianos y musulmanes.
