@drkellyscriven When I applied for fellowship, even attendings said “it’s a great job except for the parents.”
It can help to think of oneself as a physician for families, to avoid treating the wellbeing of lil’ patients as separate from that of their parents.
So important
If there's uncertainty I say 'I'm worried, they're sick enough to die... We will do medical X but they could get worse... Does anyone want to visit? Any spiritual needs? Anything else we can do? Would you want to be rung overnight if we thought they were dying?'
It is so important that healthcare professionals communicate the disease clearly to the loved ones.
To some extent, they are also their patients even though they are not the ones having the medical condition.

Further, also in the adult system, loved ones should be part of the conversation #HospitalsTalkToLovedOnes#MedTwitter
Love for #medicine coexists with love for #humanity (Hippocrates), which is the center of all definable things (Protagoras - ca 430 BC)
2400 years later the debate on #patient and #human-centered #healthcare goes on 🏥

This is a crucial point for loved ones to be included as part of efficient #communication with the hospital team.
