National Police Week started back in 1962 when John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation making May 15th Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week surrounding it National Police Week. It wasn’t created for politics, headlines, or hashtags. It was created to honor the men and women who pinned on a badge, stood the line between order and chaos, and never made it home.

This week is about remembering the cops who answered calls everyone else ran from. The ones who saw combat everyday on the streets of our communities. The ones who walked into gunfire, domestic violence, overdoses, riots, and absolute human darkness because somebody had to. It’s about honoring the families who live with an empty chair at the table because their husband, wife, son, daughter, mother, or father wore the badge.

People love to judge law enforcement from the comfort of a couch and a cellphone. But when things go sideways at 2AM, everyone suddenly wants a cop rolling code to save the day. That reality hasn’t changed.

National Police Week is about respect for sacrifice. Respect for courage under pressure. Respect for the officers still grinding through long shifts, missed holidays, garbage pay in some places, political heat, and constant scrutiny — yet still showing up to protect complete strangers.

To the officers who gave everything: we remember you.

To the ones still standing the watch today: stay dangerous, stay sharp, and watch each other’s backs.
