@MonicaBaumann@opinonhaver@Brien_Jackson Ok, and there are plenty of people coopting trans causes for their own desires (power, usually). No sense in focusing on either group.
The narrative that President Zelensky hasn't held elections in the middle of a war and is therefore a "dictator" is completely wrong.
Countries at war for their survival do this as standard practice. Britain didn't have general elections during WW2 and then had one as soon as it was over.
That is exactly what will happen in Ukraine.
As I think of it, Trump pushes Russia's two main communication vectors of propaganda...and he states it as facts
1) Ukraine started the war
2) Zelensky is illegitimate and responsible for there not being peace
That's not acceptable. He's as divorced from reality as Biden was
I was obviously very wrong about Trump and Ukraine
I feel incredibly stupid for getting this wrong
There’s no excuse for the things he said at this press conference
He was callous and superficial…honestly, I can’t spin this into anything positive
Remember that time the puritans found all those witches? You could tell because they were the witches because they were like, “Please, stop, I’m not a witch?”
UPDATE: Today, I fell for a sophisticated phishing email, and I got hacked. Yesterday, someone demanded my home address. The people upset that I wrote a column about the joys of social drinking or called them a COVID cult have sealioned my account w/ 1,000+ mentions, DM's, etc. I've been called a mass murderer of disabled people, a eugenicist, and Hitler. Some have dragged my mom into this. I will not be intimidated, but this is strangely the most scared I've ever been on the Internet.
Man, I don’t know…
We need upgrades for sure. Europe’s en-route system is a lot better than ours, and the FAA’s “tech refresh” has been decades in the making, without a lot to show for it.
On the other hand, you can really screw this up. Unintended consequences.
I welcome a fresh set of eyes & a new way of thinking, but I don’t necessarily want “rapid” change for the sake of rapid, or for the sake of change.
Let’s identify the problems, vet the solutions & implement them slowly, as test cases. The crash in DCA was not really a “the entire system is broken” event, it was a one-off & specific to DCA.
Obama foreign policy was horrible because—for purely ideological reasons— it abused allies and rewarded adversaries, resulting in policy that’s not only immoral but self-defeating.
Abusing allies and reaching out to adversaries to cut deals appears cost-free—at first. They used to say, as if they had a sophisticated point, “you don’t have to make peace with your allies; you do it with your enemies.”
But nobody behaves this way in their normal lives or in business negotiations. “Reward your friends and punish your enemies” has been true since the beginning of time because it encourages people to become friends rather than enemies.
The Obama crowd believed this because it saw our old enemies as righteous and put-upon, and our allies as troublemakers or worse. It was radical because sought to totally reorient our relationships abroad without making that case to the American people.
I’m concerned that the Trump administration has been hiring people whose expressed policy choices and goals are identical to Obama’s. To the extent these people are listened to, it will harm American interests the way Obama did.
Baader–Meinhof phenomenon is a cognitive bias, also called “frequency illusion”.
It’s a combination of selective attention (you notice a thing) & confirmation bias (seeking evidence). Recency illusion adds (you just noticed it; it must be new).
It’s weaponized by bad actors.
You notice a plane crash – selective attention. “Oh my, that’s unusual!”
You seek evidence – confirmation bias. “Hey, another thing happened! Something is definitely going on!”
Recency illusion kicks in. “This didn’t happen before! Something has changed!”
And, like that, you’re ready to accept an explanation. You crave one; there is a void you need to fill. So…in step the bad actors.
They don’t have to offer a logical explanation. They don’t even necessarily have to explain exactly how it happened, as long as they give you a boogeyman to blame it on & it sounds at least somewhat credible…you can’t blame it on ghosts or aliens, but maybe there is an intelligence plot or it was suicide!
Sound familiar?
It should, both sides are weaponizing it right now.
So, let’s attack contributing factors. We are specifically attacking confirmation bias & recency illusion here, by seeing if this did, in fact, happen before & if it seems to suddenly be happening at a higher rate. In doing so, though, we hope to also expose selective attention – you just didn’t notice it happening before.
Let’s take a look back. To keep your eyes from glazing over, I’m only listing accidents w/ fatalities, and only those that occurred in the three months prior to the DCA crash. Here we go, in reverse order:
29 Jan (same day as DCA): Beechcraft 1900, 20 fatalities
29 Jan (same day as DCA): Cessna Citation 550, 3 fatalities
9 Jan: Cessna Citation CJ1, 1 fatality
7 Jan: Cessna 208, 3 fatalities
29 Dec: Boeing 737, 179 fatalities (Jeju air, you probably have heard of this one)
25 Dec: Embraer ERJ-190, 38 fatalities
22 Dec: BN-2B Islander, 5 fatalities
18 Dec: Bombardier Challenger, 2 fatalities
17 Dec: Cessna 208, 2 fatalities
25 Nov: Boeing 737, 1 fatality
5 Nov: Honda Hondajet, 4 fatalities
(Listings courtesy of the Aviation Safety Network, a service of the Flight Safety Foundation. Link: https://t.co/CHiGSGiQYK)
Because I chose to only list incidents with fatalities, I maybe only captured 10-20% of the total incidents in the last three months. I excluded one Airbus incident where the fatality was due to smoke inhalation.
Have we maybe put a dent in the recency illusion? Did you know about all these before, or is this the first you’ve heard of them? Think selective attention may be at play?
Do you remember January 2024, when all the Boeing planes were going to fall out of the sky? Did they?
As long as you CAN be manipulated, you WILL be manipulated. That’s just the information war we live inside, whether you like it or not. Each side will seize on any event & weaponize it. It doesn’t have to be true; by the time the investigation is complete, that will have been multiple battles ago & ancient history.
Be skeptical of anyone making claims. Including me, for that matter. Many don’t actually care if they are right or wrong, they just want your attention & to direct your reaction; to induce or reinforce behavior in you that they perceive as favorable to their objectives.
As for me; if I thought something was going on in aviation right now, I wouldn’t come to work. I’ve got plenty of sick time & my kids need a Dad.
None of this is to detract from the sorrow of the recent accidents. It is, however, a plea to ignore and – if necessary – shame those who politicize these things for their own agenda.
If you think “your side” hasn’t been doing it…you’re in too deep.
Matt Walsh is a proud misogynist, as are many of the men on the right. They know what a woman is, but they don’t think we’re their equals in any way.
We had to join forces with these pigs because the trans community was a bigger threat, but they have never had any intention of actually being on our side. The US had to ally with Stalin to stop Hitler — but that didn’t make Stalin a good guy, and because people failed to understand that, he was able to swallow up half of Europe. If we don’t have an open-eyed, clear understanding of the motives of men like this, we’ll lose everything we’ve gained over the last seventy years: they will stab us in the back while we’re still celebrating.
Look at this tweet — categorizing Nancy Mace as a DEI beneficiary is a preview of the play they will be using against every single woman who achieves anything from now on. She graduated from the Citadel, and he’s calling it a ridiculous thing to brag about. Somehow, I don’t think he’d say the same about a man who was justifiably proud of his own achievements.
Men like this will belittle our accomplishments and pat us on the rear before they send us back to the kitchen if we aren’t careful.
Enough of the victimhood.
You can buy healthy food in American supermarkets.
No one is forcing you to buy crap food - you’re not a victim if you choose to.
The food industry has done nothing to you.
Don’t want to eat crap food then don’t.
