$470 MILLION PROMISED. $1 MILLION DEPOSITED. WHAT HAPPENED? 🇺🇸🌹

The Obama Foundation said it wanted a $470 million endowment as part of a larger fundraising plan. The purpose was to create a long-term financial reserve to help operate and maintain the Center in the future.

According to Form 990 filings, about $1 million was placed into the endowment in 2021, and the amount has remained near that level.

The opening of the Obama Presidential Center has kicked off, and celebrities, donors, and political leaders are in town celebrating.

Meanwhile, many Chicago residents continue asking questions about displacement, public land, eminent domain, TIF districts, Opportunity Zones, and who truly benefits from redevelopment projects across the city.

For years, communities on the South and West Sides have watched public land change hands, neighborhoods transform, and longtime residents struggle with rising costs, property taxes, and displacement. Those concerns deserve to be heard, whether people agree with them or not.

Back in September 2023, Zoe Leigh recorded this video while protesting what she believed were unlawful eminent domain proceedings involving her family’s case.

People can criticize how these issues are brought to light. But when billions of dollars, redevelopment projects, political influence, and commission-based interests are involved, many stop asking what happens to the people left behind.

At the end of the day, the question remains:

Who benefits, who pays the price, and who gets displaced?

From South Shore Drive to Jeffrey: What I Saw . Please watch until the end.

I traveled from 75th & Exchange to 75th & Jeffrey, and I probably saw only about five businesses that were open. The rest of the buildings were boarded up, abandoned, or sitting vacant. That is unacceptable.

I also traveled along 79th Street from Exchange to Jeffrey, talking with citizens and seeing the conditions firsthand. Again, what I saw was unacceptable.
If we want something different, we must choose leadership that cares about each and every community.

Every neighborhood deserves the opportunity to be economically thriving because, when all communities thrive, Chicago as a whole becomes a thriving city.

I had the opportunity to speak with citizens who live in the area, and I truly enjoyed meeting and listening to the people of the community. Hearing directly from citizens about their concerns, challenges, and hopes for their neighborhood is one of the most important parts of this journey.

As Mayor, I will focus on economic development in every neighborhood, not just downtown or a select few communities.

My Chicagoans First platform includes cutting red tape for small businesses, reducing unnecessary fees and regulations, improving public safety, revitalizing commercial corridors, supporting local entrepreneurs, expanding trade programs, helping create more small businesses that reflect the community, increasing recreational investments, building safer neighborhoods, and ensuring city resources are invested where they are needed most.

I will work to fill vacant storefronts, support property owners, encourage investment without displacing longtime citizens, and make sure every community has a real opportunity to thrive. I believe every neighborhood deserves safe streets, thriving businesses, quality services, and a seat at the table.
I will be back.

I am committed to visiting all 50 wards across Chicago, including Pilsen, Little Village, communities on the West Side, the North Side, and everywhere in between. Every community deserves to be heard, and every community deserves leadership that shows up.

I won’t be attending the Obama Presidential Center opening. I stand with the Black contractors and workers who have been left behind. The African American Contractors Association has reported that at least 10 Black-owned firms are owed millions of dollars for work connected to the project. At the same time, President Obama declined to support a Community Benefits Agreement that many residents believed could have helped protect longtime Black families from displacement and rising housing costs.

The South Side deserved development that created wealth and stability for the people who stayed through decades of disinvestment. Instead, too many Black contractors are still fighting to get paid, and too many Black residents are being pushed out of the very neighborhood this project was supposed to uplift. Progress should be measured by how the community benefits not by the size of the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Yes, you read that right. That is the amount that was incorrectly put in the Illinois State Budget that passed the House and Senate at 4AM on June 1st.

The Democrats and Governor Pritzker are trying to explain this away as a simple error. However, what it has actually done is proven the point of Republicans that it is completely reckless for the Democrats to pass 4,000 page budgets in the middle of the night.

We thought it was just Republicans that didn't have a chance to read the budget, but apparently not even the Democrats proofread their last minute amendments.

If a $500 billion dollar mistake can make it in the state budget, what else is being shoved in those pages that nobody knows about? It's time for transparency!
