The operation was carried out solely as part of area administration and security management, following the restoration of control over Thai sovereignty.

The structure concerned was not installed as a registered or officially recognized religious site. More importantly, its removal was undertaken with the objective of affirming effective control of the area, reducing the risk of misunderstanding, and preventing the use of structures and symbols that could be exploited to lead to further tension.

Thailand holds deep respect for all religions and belief systems, including Hinduism, which shares longstanding historical and cultural connections with countries across Southeast Asia. The Thai side is mindful of the feelings of people of all faiths worldwide and expresses sincere regret for any discomfort that may have arisen from misunderstandings due to the circulation of images without full context.

The Joint Press Center reiterates that Thailand remains firmly committed to peaceful means, diplomacy, and responsible communication. The Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India stresses that disrespectful acts such as demolishing statues of deities hurt the sentiments of followers around the world, and should not take place.

In response to media queries on the demolition of Hindu deity statue in an area affected by the ongoing Thai-Cambodia border dispute, Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Hindu and Buddhist deities are deeply revered and worshipped by people across the region as part of shared civilizational heritage.

He urged the two sides to return to dialogue and diplomacy, to resume peace and avoid any further loss of lives and damage to property and heritage.

President of the Buddhist Association of Cambodia, Ven. Preah Serikosol Som Sokha, has warned that the destruction of Hindu statues by Thailand could seriously offend more than 1.2 billion Hindus around the world and provoke widespread condemnation.

Speaking on the issue, Ven. Som Sokha said that damaging statues of Hindu deities, regarded as sacred places of worship, could have a profound psychological and spiritual impact on Hindu believers globally.

“There are approximately 1.2 billion Hindus worldwide, representing about 15 percent of the global population, with India being the country that has the largest Hindu population,” he said. “Such actions against sacred statues will undoubtedly be condemned, as they constitute harm to objects of worship deeply revered by Hindu followers.”

Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has issued a statement condemning Thailand over the reported vandalism of a Hindu statue near the Cambodia–Thailand border, allegedly carried out by Thai soldiers. The ministry described the act as one of “utter disrespect.”

A spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that Hinduism and Buddhism are religions revered by people across the region. The spokesperson added that, regardless of territorial disputes or claims, acts that disrespect religious symbols harm the sentiments of believers worldwide and should not be tolerated.

The incident has raised concerns about the protection of religious and cultural heritage in disputed areas and has drawn increasing international attention.
