Broken headmaster-pastor w/ an incredible Savior, an amazing wife & treasures for kids. My passion is helping people take awe at & live in light of Jesus
37 years ago today, the Chinese government brutally crushed peaceful protesters in and around Tiananmen Square who were demanding an end to corruption, freedom of speech, and democratic reform. The massacre revealed a truth the world should never forget: the Chinese Communist Party will do whatever it takes to preserve its grip on power. If it did not value the lives of its own citizens, why would it value the lives of others?
For all people’s talk about never learning things in school, there’s a real, and dangerous, dearth of understanding about the period between the Civil War and WWII, and it’s full of these shocking policies.
Angela Duckworth is a psychologist who proved that talent is wildly overrated and grit predicts success.
She revealed 10 daily habits that build grit that schools never teach you.
1) Adding the word "yet"
💥NEW: Rahm Emanuel *NUKES* Dem Party💥
KATIE COURIC: “Why do you think people feel so negatively about the Democratic party?”
EMANUEL: “Because we EARNED their disrespect — the hard way!”
“We did things that were really RIDICULOUS! We let a border get out of control, we talked about defunding the police, we called them Latinx — and NOBODY else in that group EVER identified themselves that way.”
If you are suffering, depressed, and see only darkness today - you are not alone. Remember:
- Jacob’s limp
- Joseph’s tears
- Job’s agonies
- David’s Psalms
- Elijah’s desire to die
- Hannah’s weeping
- Jeremiah’s lamentations
- Paul’s thorn
- Jesus in Gethsemane
Family estrangement often brings relief at first because people don't walk away from relationships hoping to be unhappy.
But research shows that for many people, the relief doesn't last. Over time, family estrangement is associated with higher rates of depression, poorer physical health, and chronic unhappiness.
We're wired for connection with our kin. When those bonds break, something deep within us recognizes that the relationship isn't as it should be.
Not every family conflict can be repaired. Not every relationship is safe. But before accepting permanent distance as the only answer, it's worth asking whether reconciliation is still possible.
God's most significant objective in my life, from salvation until Jesus returns, is sanctification. We want our lives to be comfortable, successful, and predictable, but God is willing to compromise all of these in order to deal with our deepest difficulty: indwelling and remaining sin.
"Being married w/ children is a strong predictor of happiness, for men & women alike," wrote @shadihamid, adding, "A society w/ fewer couples & fewer kids is a society that is more atomized, alienated, & sad." https://t.co/BEcEbpk6FK
The diary of an ADD Church Planter:
6am: wake up with 47 ideas, 1 of which is good and at least half of which aren't feasible for several years.
7am: talk about Jesus with someone over highly caffeinated beverages, experience confirmation of calling.
8:30am: start sermon prep & doubt whether you are called to ministry.
11am: check email & have doubts confirmed.
11:30am: talk about Jesus with someone over lunch, & realize you were an idiot for doubting.
1pm: Have a 60 minute stag meeting that solved 1 problem and created 6.
4pm: remember that you haven't touched base with your supporters in 4-6 months, check to see if anyone stopped giving, and hammer out an update email that doesn't do justice to either ministry fruit or gratitude for support.
6pm: talk about Jesus with that young married couple over for dinner, and thank God that he didn't call you to accounting.
9pm: realize you need to rewrite your whole sermon because __________.
Repeat.
@lrj0hns1 The problem w/ this perspective: the majority of church leaders and 80+% of small AND large churches at PCA's founding were "Big Tent".
Everhard & co. are creating novel emphases & anachronistically acting like that is what historic PCA or historic presbyterianism is.
Sinners cannot imagine that the things they love are the very things that keep them from happiness. Their fear of the light and refusal to let go of the darkness is a struggle against joy.
@3IDWarrant Not that odd, in that licensing in the past was always about having money to survive, but now they have the cash producing assets that enabled them to do most anything alone.
CAs goal has always been to be the next AMGN.
One of the strangest things about modern education is how little confidence adults have in children.
We assume students
Cannot sit still
Cannot memorize poetry
Cannot understand history
Cannot read difficult books
Cannot discuss moral questions seriously
Then you spend time around classical schools and realize most children are capable of far more than we expect.
The problem was never their intelligence.
The problem was the poverty of our expectations.
“Never before in the history of humankind has so radical an experiment in social isolation ever been conducted on such a scale, and the effects on fertility are and will continue to be profound.” @lymanstoneky@wapo https://t.co/9P8prZouoO @FamStudies
Sen. John Fetterman unloads on Graham Platner: “What kind of a creeper has been on a platform like Kik.”
“All I'm saying, it's like, when I was growing up, if someone had a clear Nazi tattoo on them, you probably could conclude that they are a Nazi sympathizer.”
