I agree. Lately, tipping has gotten out of hand. Servers used to rely more heavily on tips because their base wages were lower. As wages increased, restaurant prices increased as well. When food prices go up, sales tax goes up, the total bill goes up, and percentage-based tips naturally become larger too.

Looking at this receipt, the steak alone was significantly more expensive than several of the other entrees. In that case, you’re essentially being expected to tip more simply because one item cost more, not because the server necessarily did more work.

Maybe it’s time to rethink the traditional percentage-based model altogether. Perhaps tipping should be based more on the quality of service and the size of the party rather than the total dollar amount of the bill.
