Constipation is associated with a higher risk of hypertension, heart attack and stroke in people aged 60 or more

About 15% people aged 60 and above suffer from constipation.
In a recently published study, the association between constipation, hypertension and cardiovascular events were studied in 541,172 hospitalized patients aged ≥ 60 years.

Results of the study
1. Compared to people with no constipation, people with constipation had 2-fold higher risk of hypertension,
2. People with constipation also had 30% higher risk of cardiovascular events, 10% higher risk of myocardial infaction, and 50% higher risk of stroke,
3. Hypertension is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular events and this study also showed so,
4. The effects of hypertension and constipation were additive. People with both constipation and hypertension had almost 7-fold higher risk of cardiovascular events and stroke.

Possible mechanisms linking constipation and hypertension
1. Gut dysbiosis
2. Straining at stool could raise the BP by as much as 70 mmHg.

Take home message
1. Risk factor evaluation in older people should include history of constipation,
2. Efforts should be made to determine the cause of constipation and appropriately treat it.

Limitation: This study only studied the association, so, cause and effect can not be established. Further studies are needed to make a definitive conclusion.
