The F-35 is the only option, the current F-18 is beyond tired and should been replaced a decade ago. I worked on the F-18's when they were brand new, state of art at that time.
There's a NFB movie called "The Defender" made in 1988. The film centers around a guy suggesting to buy a 1000 ultra lights instead of the F-18. This really applies to the Gripen. Honestly would you buy a 1988 Ford Aerostar van but with an updated radio.

Everything that makes money in the Atlantic provinces is owned by the Irving’s, or the McCain s. The western provinces are not owned by 2 families. There are hundreds if not thousands of people in the west who are wealthy entrepreneurs, worth multiple millions of dollars. The citizens in Atlantic region can not wrap their minds around this they have always worked for the wealthy. The thought of creating a new country would truly baffle them, since they can not rationalize the concept.
