Pull up the satellite. The southeast corner of Spain has a white scab on it, hard-edged and geometric, bright enough that your eye reads it as a fault in the image. 40,000 hectares of plastic sheeting, packed frame to frame from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada to the Mediterranean. The Spanish astronaut Pedro Duque, asked about it in 2007, said you can see the greenhouses of Almería clearly from the space station. It is not a city, a dam or a wall. It is salad.

The first one went up in 1963.

The mirror is so vast it changed the weather. NASA's satellites show the reflectivity of the province rose by about 10 per cent between 1983 and 2006, and the surface cooled by 0.3°C a decade while the region around it warmed by 0.5°C. The change to the local energy balance is 20 watts per square metre, 30 in summer. Global warming's forcing is 1.66. Almería built a mirror an order of magnitude more powerful than climate change, by accident, to grow cucumbers.

Underneath is the only true hot desert in Europe. 200mm of rain a year. Every drop of the water comes out of the aquifers, and the aquifers are finishing. Wells sunk a kilometre down now bring up water that is no use to anybody, because as the fresh water drops the Mediterranean moves in behind it, and salt does not leave. Between a fifth and a half of the fertiliser applied up top leaches down into the same water table.

Almería is also one of the most water-efficient growing systems on the planet. Computer-controlled hydroponics, drip lines, dosing to the millilitre. It is done properly, and the efficiency is what drained it: efficiency cut the cost per plant, the cheaper plant justified another hectare, and the hectares kept arriving until demand outran the aquifer. Doing it well emptied it faster than doing it badly could have.

Around 100,000 migrant workers run the plastic sea, mostly Moroccan, Senegalese and Malian, and by Channel 4's count about half have no papers. A greenhouse in an Andalusian summer is a sealed box in a desert, and men spray pesticides inside that box in a paper mask or in nothing at all, in air they cannot leave. A Spanish government-funded report concluded that the export miracle would not exist without the exploitation.

They sleep in the packaging. The sheeting lasts a few years in that sun, and when it comes off the frames the people who worked under it drag it away and stretch it over pallets to make a roof. No running water, no sanitation, in a province that exports water by the tonne in the shape of a courgette. The blue plastic drums the pesticide came in get cut open and used as household water tanks. When a camp becomes too visible from the road the bulldozers clear it, and the same people build the next one a mile away out of the same material.

33,000 tonnes of greenhouse plastic a year, most of it dumped rather than processed, going into the soil and down the ravines as dust.

So the January shelf works like this. A desert, mirrored over. An aquifer emptied with exemplary precision and refilled with seawater. Men spraying poison in sealed heat and sleeping in the packaging. 3.5 million tonnes of produce chilled and driven 1,500 miles north, so that a tomato can exist in February and taste of nothing whatsoever.

Britain imports 83 per cent of its fruit and 45 per cent of its vegetables. Spain is the largest single supplier.

And a cow standing on a Welsh hillside in the rain, eating grass that grows back on its own, is what we are told to feel guilty about.

Go and look at it, then tell me which of those two systems is the one nobody is allowed to defend.

The Birmingham policing scandal has crossed a line. What began as cowardice has curdled into something far worse.

It has now emerged that a Birmingham mosque was involved in interviewing and appointing the police chief whose force later excluded Jewish football supporters from public life. This is not a minor procedural curiosity. It goes to the heart of why the truth was bent, why the threat was inverted, and why the victims were removed instead of protected.

Craig Guildford, the head of West Midlands Police, was appointed after a process that included Kamran Hussain, then chief executive of Green Lane mosque, sitting on an interview panel. That same mosque was later consulted by the force ahead of the decision to exclude Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters from Villa Park. The same force then claimed, falsely, that the threat came from Jewish fans rather than from local extremists preparing violence.
Individually, each of these facts can be brushed aside. Together, they form a pattern that can no longer be ignored.

Green Lane mosque is not an abstract "community partner". It has hosted preachers who promoted antisemitic conspiracy theories and sectarian intolerance. Government funding was suspended after videos surfaced of sermons excusing discrimination and endorsing physical "discipline" of wives. These are not marginal details. They are the backdrop.

And yet this institution was treated as a stakeholder in policing decisions affecting Jews. Its former chief executive helped vet the man now presiding over a force accused of lying to Parliament, concealing intelligence, and rewriting events to protect its reputation.

This is not an accusation of crude conspiracy. It is something more corrosive. It is the exposure of a system in which authority is shaped by appeasement networks. Where those most capable of causing unrest are granted influence. Where enforcement becomes negotiable and truth becomes inconvenient.

That is how we arrived at a position where police logs recorded masked groups gathering, youths "looking to fight", and intelligence that the Israeli team was being tracked online. And yet the public was told the day was "largely peaceful" to avoid "over-dramatisation". This was not reassurance. It was deception.

When Keir Starmer called the ban wrong, he was right. When Kemi Badenoch demanded Guildford's dismissal, she was right. When critics said this reeked of political pressure rather than policing necessity, they were right again.

The most revealing detail is not who sat on which panel. It is what followed. A police force that consults mosques hosting extremist rhetoric. A leadership culture shaped by "community engagement" where the loudest voices are treated as veto-holders. A decision to exclude Jews "for their own safety". And then a cover-up to make it all look routine.

This is how equal policing is dismantled. Not through open prejudice, but through institutional fear. Not because officers hate Jews, but because the system rewards accommodation and punishes enforcement. Because it is easier to manage the victims than confront the threat.

The defenders of this arrangement will say there is nothing sinister here. That processes were followed. That panels were broad. That no single individual decided anything. That is precisely the problem. When responsibility is so diffused that no one is accountable, injustice becomes frictionless.

A country that allows sectarian pressure to shape police leadership and operational decisions is no longer policing by consent. It is policing by concession.

Birmingham did not stumble into this outcome. It arrived there by design. And until that design is dismantled, this will not be the last time a minority is told to stay away quietly so others do not have to behave. That is not the rule of law. It is governance by fear.

Majek should never have been there. Not in Britain. Not in that hotel. Not near unprotected women doing their jobs. He lied about his age. He was assessed as an adult despite claiming to be a teenager. He had been observed staring at female staff. Police had been called repeatedly to the hotel. Former staff warned it was a ticking time bomb. The warnings were known. They were ignored. This is the real cost of the Channel crossings con. Not statistics. Not slogans. Lives.

Seven Afghans. Forty Charges. Two Children. One Open Border.

This morning, seven Afghan nationals appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court charged with 40 offences including rape, conspiracy to rape and human trafficking. The accused are Ahmadin Ahmadzai (20), Jamil Khalili (20), Fazal Auryakhel (20), Qais Kaker (20), Mohammed Farooq Shinwary (20), Sayed Wahid Davodzai (20) and Ali Ahamad (21). Six of the seven are twenty years old. The victims were girls aged in their early to mid teens. The offending ran from August 2023 to May 2025. Five of the seven arrived in Britain by small boat. One arrived concealed in a lorry in June 2020. All hold refugee status. All were dispersed into the Norwich community. None of the authorities who admitted them, housed them and granted them status appear to have considered what that community might be asked to absorb.

On the same day, seven men appeared at Bristol Magistrates Court charged with more than 40 offences against eleven teenage victims. Among them: an Iranian national and a Syrian national. The offending ran from 2022 to 2025. Two cities. Two sets of charges. One day. The pattern is not a coincidence. It is a consequence.

The Norwich case began in September 2023 when a young girl made a disclosure to police. By that point the offending had already been running for over a month. The investigation took nearly three years to produce charges. During those three years, Britain admitted a further 41,000 people by small boat in 2025 alone, the second highest annual total on record. The government dispersed them into communities across the country. It did not tell those communities who was arriving, where they had come from, or what, if anything, was known about them.

This is the direct and documented consequence of that policy. Afghan nationals arrive unvetted from a country run by the Taliban, a regime that treats women as property, denies them education, forbids them public life and stones them for alleged moral infractions. They are granted refugee status. They are housed in British cities. They are given access to British communities. And in Norwich, in Warwickshire, in Southampton, in Epping, in Bristol, the same pattern repeats itself. Young girls, overwhelmingly white and working class, are targeted, groomed and raped by men whose culture of origin regards them as objects without rights or recourse.

The national grooming gangs inquiry formally began work on 13 April 2026, six weeks ago. It will examine whether ethnicity and culture played a role in the crimes and the institutional response to them. It will run for three years. The Norwich case alone took three years to produce charges. Meanwhile, the boats keep coming. The dispersals continue. And somewhere in Britain tonight, in a city that does not yet know what it has been asked to absorb, the next case is already unfolding.

The government's response to this morning's charges was to note that none of the accused had lived in asylum hotels in Norfolk. That is the full extent of its reassurance. Not that the border will close. Not that vetting will improve. Not that communities will be consulted before men from Taliban-governed Afghanistan are settled among them. Simply that the hotels were not involved. And as you read this, hundreds of migrants are crossing the Channel. The boats do not stop for court appearances.

Twenty-two people died at the Manchester Arena because Britain admitted a family that claimed sanctuary and produced terrorists. Two girls in Norwich were raped by men Britain admitted as refugees. The same argument has been made after every case. The same argument has been ignored after every case. Compassion and national security are not the same thing. A government that cannot distinguish between them will keep producing the same results.

Angela Rayner must explain why her government department has deleted all responses to the Working Group tasked with drafting the official definition of Islamophobia — now repackaged as “anti-Muslim hostility”.

The Free Speech Union exposed that all five members of the group had troubling links to Islamist groups.

This definition has revived Britain’s blasphemy laws via the back door for Islam alone. It is already having a chilling effect on free speech.

The public deserves to know why these responses were deleted.

A farmer in Shropshire is selling his farm this September and nobody has died.

Two hundred and twenty acres. A hundred and forty ewes, seventy suckler cows, a shed with one end held up by a telegraph pole, and a tractor bought new in 1994, which is the last thing on that farm that was bought new. His grandfather bought the place outright in 1961. He is 54 and has never had a penny of debt.

The books say the farm lost eleven thousand pounds last year. It lost money the year before as well.

He is not bad at this. The government's own review, chaired by Minette Batters, found nearly a third of British farms were loss-making in 2024.

On paper the same farm is worth £1.9 million.

Pasture in his county averaged £8,600 an acre last year, and not a pound of that was set by anything he grows. Two blocks within nine miles went to buyers he has never met. One for solar. One described in the particulars as a natural capital opportunity.

His mother is 81 and lives in the bungalow at the top of the lane. When that comes across with the other half of the ground, the two halves clear the £2.5 million threshold, and twenty per cent of the excess is a bill in six figures on a business that has not made money in three years.

His son is a radiographer in Telford and is not coming back. He said so once, kindly, and never made his father ask twice.

So it goes now, while he can still choose which fields and to whom. He is selling the good ground first, because you cannot raise a bill off the rough.

The Treasury collects nothing from any of this. The sale happens years before the tax event, so there is no tax event left to have.

What Britain loses is a hundred and forty lambs and seventy calves a year, off ground that will never produce food again, in a country that already imports forty per cent of what it eats and has just had its worst cereal harvest since records began.

That is one farm. There are thousands of them, doing the sums at the same kitchen table this month.

The beef on your shelf this Christmas will come from Brazil, and the price will be higher, and nobody will connect the two.
