A 2025 meta-analysis found few meaningful generational differences at work. A global study of 546,000 people found no narcissism epidemic. Most of what managers call generational is an age effect.

One sad reality of job hunting is that employment gaps are often viewed negatively by employers, no matter how genuine the reason behind them.
Over the years, I have seen many professionals and senior executives try to explain gaps by saying they were running their own business or helping with a family business. In most cases, that explanation does little to change how some employers perceive the gap. Whether fair or unfair, employment gaps often carry a stigma.
The longer the gap, the harder it can become to secure another job. It can affect whether you are shortlisted, how recruiters assess your application, and even how interview panels view your suitability for a role.
There is no perfect solution to this challenge. My advice is simple: be honest. If you were retrenched, say so. If you were dismissed, acknowledge it and explain what you learned from the experience. If you resigned without another job lined up, explain the circumstances truthfully.
Most employers can deal with an honest explanation. What they struggle with is inconsistency, evasiveness, or answers that do not add up.
You may not be able to control how employers perceive an employment gap, but you can control how honestly and confidently you explain it.
Keeping working on your CV and you will win one day.
