This week, the @USFWS proposed to change #EndangeredSpeciesAct protections for grizzly bears in the Lower 48 states, while leaving open the door to a future proposal to delist the species from federal protections all together.

We cannot allow the USFWS to remove federal protections from grizzly bears right now. There are only about 2,000 grizzly bears left, living in small, segmented and isolated populations and occupying just 6% of their historic range.

Any official who tries to make the case that grizzly populations are currently large enough and can sustain increased mortality is overlooking the facts. Please stand with us and tell USFWS to keep grizzly bears protected!

🚨BREAKING🚨

The Trump administration has finalized changes that would weaken #EndangeredSpeciesAct protections for imperiled species listed as threatened in the future, such as southern sea otters and West Indian manatees.

For half a century, the Endangered Species Act has prevented the extinction of America’s most vulnerable wildlife, providing essential protections before species reach the point of no return. Today’s decision amounts to an utter abdication of the federal government’s responsibility to protect America’s wildlife.

We urge @Interior @SecretaryBurgum to honor the mandate that Congress and President Nixon established more than 50 years ago. The department’s role is to faithfully implement—and certainly not to dismantle—the Endangered Species Act.

A lot of special interest groups are lurking in the shadows and pushing for the removal of endangered species protections for grizzly bears and for the obliteration of the #EndangeredSpeciesAct itself. And they, not the wildlife biologists and other professional scientists, are the ones who seem to have the ear of the Secretary of the @Interior and the governors.

As one of planet’s oldest creatures, sharks play a critical role in keeping our ocean ecosystems healthy and thriving, and we have a duty to keep them safe from harm.

We helped turn Americans’ strong opposition to the shark fin trade into congressional action, leading to the passage of the Shark Fin Sale Elimination Act in 2022 to further crack down on the trade. Shark fins typically come from finning, an undeniably cruel practice that involves slicing off sharks’ fins and throwing their bodies back into the ocean to die a slow, helpless death.

For more than half a century, the Endangered Species Act has helped save wildlife in large part because it protects the habitats animals need to survive. Last week, the Trump administration issued a rule changing a regulatory interpretation of the word “harm” in the Endangered Species Act that has been essential to its function.

This is a shocking abdication of leadership at key federal agencies with a statutory duty to protect wildlife under the Endangered Species Act, and it is a failure of government.
