It's official: Big cats, bears and primates will no longer be used in traveling acts like circuses and fairs in Illinois!
Illinois has taken a major step forward for animal welfare with Governor Pritzker signing HB 4255 into law. This new law builds on Illinois’ first-in-the-nation ban on elephants in traveling acts and reflects what we know to be true: wild animals do not belong in entertainment.
We are grateful to the Governor, bill sponsors, lawmakers and advocates who made this historic progress possible!
From rescue to recovery. 🩵
Rescued during the closure of a dog meat slaughterhouse in Kupang, Indonesia, these dogs are now safe with our trusted partners at JAAN, where they’re healing, gaining confidence and preparing for adoption. We’re so excited to watch them step into the lives they deserve.

Habitat loss is believed to be the greatest threat wild animals face worldwide. Lawns are a small part of this problem, but it’s a part we have a lot of control over. Through simple actions, we can help our wild neighbors survive in a changing world. https://t.co/BRXgtDafTA
Over more than a decade, our advocacy and rescue at Yulin and across China has shone a spotlight on this brutal trade and resulted in hundreds of dogs and cats being saved from slaughter. In that time, we have seen the Yulin event significantly reduced in size with far fewer dog meat markets and fewer animals slaughtered. It has also reduced in length of time, with the core “festival” days declining from 10 days to now just a couple of days; and it has reduced in visibility with dog slaughter mostly carried out at at slaughterhouses on the outskirts of Yulin, hidden from view. The words “dog meat” has also been removed from restaurant signs and the former large public displays of mass dog meat eating a thing of the past. Considering the horrific scale of the Yulin “festival” many years ago, this progress is encouraging, but Humane World for Animals remains committed to ending the dog and cat meat trade in Yulin and across China. More proactive and decisive steps are needed by the authorities to end this cruel and often illegal trade in Yulin and we are supporting our partner Vshine to deliver targeted activities to encourage the authorities to take further action.
HAPPENING NOW! Truckloads of dogs and cats—many of them stolen pets—are being driven long distances across provincial borders without legally required quarantine documents to be brutally slaughtered for their meat in Yulin.
Please urge China to end the animal welfare and public health nightmare of Yulin’s dog and cat meat trade: https://t.co/FZs2YVBLwA

When bushfires tore across grasslands in southeast Australia this past January, kangaroos jumped from the smoke and flames across a charred landscape covered in embers and hot coals. Our team stepped in to help with their recovery. https://t.co/ofAsKiVBQv

Yesterday, the dog and cat meat trade intensified in China’s city of Yulin. Not only is this cruel trade inconsistent with growing Chinese public concern for animal welfare, with pets being stolen for the trade and suffering terrible abuse, but it also runs contrary to China’s public health and safety regulations.
