Scientists just found a new way to communicate with neurons using focused ultrasound stimulation.
A 2026 study shows that low intensity focused ultrasound (FUS) can directly influence how neurons communicate without damaging them.
Researchers applied FUS to primary cortical neurons grown in culture and tracked intracellular calcium (Ca²⁺) signaling using live cell fluorescence imaging. Calcium is a core messenger that controls neuronal firing, synaptic activity, and cell survival. The ultrasound stimulation produced controlled, repeatable calcium responses, while cell viability and neuron structure remained unchanged.
This confirms that focused ultrasound can act as a non-invasive neuromodulation tool, altering neuronal signaling through calcium dependent pathways rather than heat or tissue damage. While the work is still in vitro, it strengthens the case for future ultrasound based brain therapies that don’t require implants, drugs or surgery.
