In India and outside, linguistic purity movements (e.g. Hindi from Persian/Arabic, Tamil from Sanskrit etc) has been quite common; cultural revivalism has been less common yet not that rare.

This is the first time where it's not about language/culture; this is religious revivalism/re-writing, which has to be dealt very differently.

Religion flows like a river. Beliefs change with time and so does iconography. As cultures expand, they adopt ideas. Tamilakam has been a constant receiver of beliefs (Vedic, Buddhist, Jain, Ajivika etc) and a constant giver too (Bhakti, Agamas etc) just like any other place.

Religious revivalism rejects the above mentioned flow and comes from a place of imposing linguistic and cultural insecurities on to belief. Iconography evolved in not just TN but everywhere. Gods grow and fall in popularity (e.g. Indra is no longer worshipped, Kannagi isn't worshipped much in TN now). Thus "the revivalist Thamizh Murugan" is more of a so-believed cultural revival than a matter of belief; the ones who believe aren't interested in "revival" because it rejects a 1500+ year old iconography that they have been worshipping. Thus it is not a wonder that (a) many people supporting this are actually atheists and (b) they are reducing Murugan to an "ancestor" who is the symbol of Tamil culture which is nowhere attested in any Tamil texts.

Just like there is no "pure Tamil" or "pure Sanskrit", there is no ONE "ancient Tamil religion". The beliefs of 300 BCE were different from those of 300 CE. Similarly, what Tamils (or their ancestors) believed in the pre-Sangam era would have been different from what we know or what we can ever know. A similar thing can be said about Indra himself, who is said to be the old Vedic major god who eventually fell to the major Puranic gods (who are also mentioned in the Vedas). From a historical POV, we definitely doubt if their Sinashta ancestors prayed to Indra.

This religious revivalism doesn't just reject the Puranas, it rejects the entire ecosystem that has been in TN from the Sangam era (Thevaram, Thiruppugazh, Divya Prabandham, Thiruvasagam etc); not to mention that the Sangam texts themselves mention Vedas and Brahmins in reference.

It's hardly 1 or 2 months and the TVK party has started showing it's true colors.
First, it usurps Temple land and gifts it to illegal occupants.

Temple is the primary owner and the occupants need to pay TAX to the temple if they've been staying there for 100's of years like in Srirangam.
