If We want a dignified life in this Country, we must sacrifice: Maulana Mahmood Madani
*JUH president also demands autonomous body on the lines of the SGPC for waqfs and he called for a national survey on chemical-based drugs abuse and for proactive parental engagement.*
New Delhi / Chennai, August 10, 2025 – At the grand conference “Voices of Freedom – Celebrating India’s Heritage” held at Zaitoon Signature, Chennai, Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani, President of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH), placed strong emphasis on the urgent need to safeguard waqf properties from government interference and manipulation. Reiterating JUH’s long-standing demand for an autonomous body on the lines of the SGPC to manage waqf assets, he advised that in the present circumstances, creating private trusts for new properties is safer than registering them as waqf due to the constant threat of government takeover. “We have many living examples of this danger,” he cautioned.
Maulana Madani further urged the Muslim community to focus on education, organization, and trade, and to counter hatred through good character, service, and wisdom. He reminded the audience that India’s freedom was not attained by chance but through more than a century of struggle and sacrifice. “History teaches us that any nation wishing to preserve its identity, culture, and faith must sacrifice. If we avoid sacrifice today, our future generations will be forced to make even greater sacrifices,” he said.
The conference brought together prominent lawyers, intellectuals, and Jamiat workers from across South India. The program was conducted by Haji Hasan Ahmad, General Secretary of Jamiat Ulama Tamil Nadu, with Maulana Mansoor Kashifi, President of Jamiat Ulama Tamil Nadu, delivering the Tamil summary of Maulana Madani’s keynote address.
*Rising Hatred and the Erosion of Justice*
Expressing deep concern over the present state of the nation, Maulana Mahmood Madani further said, “We are at a dangerous crossroads where hatred is being disguised as patriotism and oppressors are shielded from the law. This is not merely a Muslim issue; it concerns the future of all Indians. Communalism hurts not only minorities but the very fabric of the nation. Where brotherhood ends, development cannot take root.”
He stressed that constitutional rights exist but their protection is the people’s responsibility. “Neither Parliament nor the executive can be relied upon today. The only ray of hope lies in the judiciary and the legal fraternity, despite its shortcomings. We must not give up hope.”
*Education, Organization, and Trade – The Pillars of Progress*
Maulana Madani identified education, organization, and trade as the three pillars of success, acknowledging that South Indian Muslims are ahead of their northern counterparts in many respects, yet significant work remains—especially in girls’ education. He urged integration of religious and modern education at the primary level so students can both understand the Qur’an and excel in contemporary subjects.
*Warning Against Drug Abuse*
Highlighting the grave danger of drug proliferation, he noted that the menace has spread to towns and villages. He called for a national survey on chemical-based drugs and for proactive parental engagement.
Advocate Asim Shahzad spoke on the constitutional implications of the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, stressing the need to protect minority rights. Rafiq Hajiyaar, Chairman of Haramain Trust, emphasized investment in both religious and mainstream education. T. Rafiq Ahmad, Chairman of TAW Group of Companies, underscored education’s role in empowerment, while Mecca Rafiq Ahmad, Chairman of Fareeda Group of Companies, highlighted unity and constitutional secularism as essential for national progress.
Justice K. N. Basha, former judge of the Madras High Court, spoke on the judiciary’s role in protecting minority rights, citing landmark rulings.
