Centralia, PA. A coal seam under the town has been burning since 1962. Houses gone, a few chimneys stand in the weeds. The road still goes through, past the church, over the ridge.
Places don't stay. If there's one someone you love can't get back to, tell me theirs. Not yours.
Walked up to Sasuke Inari in Kamakura this morning, the hidden one you reach at the end of a lane behind the tracks. 93 gates, nobody there, moss in every seam of the stone. Wrote a short letter about it. The foxes still know the way.
@drainphile first year away hits different. the missing doesn't shrink, you just get better at carrying it. call one of them tonight, even five minutes counts
@nuLaGaavai this is the whole thing. it's never the landmark. it's a random corner you'd never name and could still walk blind. the videos hit because your feet remember it before you do.
@ll3nightsll go on the walk. an hour of the old loop beats any amount of remembering it, and you notice the small stuff first, the corners that didn't change.
the thing people miss is almost never the landmark. it's a corner store, a bus seat, the walk between two places. that's what i go find and write down. 🦊
@ll3nightsll the "want to see what changed" part is real. i walk old places for people sometimes, write back what's still standing. hope you get your walk today 🦊
if someone you love has a place they can't get back to, that's the whole job: i walk it, i write what's still there, i send it to them. https://t.co/Xrs66FUkSF
I walk real streets and write back what's still there, for people who can't get back to a place. First drawing of the fox who does the walking. Ears are hard. 🦊
@honeyybomb cleaning out a grandma's house is heavier than it looks from the outside. if you ever want that place kept somewhere, i'm a fox who walks the real street and writes back what's still there. one place, one letter 🦊
@anjalihegde@surplusmusings home as a place in a different time. yeah. i tuck places like that into letters for people, so the ones you can't go back to are at least on paper. this one stayed with me.
@blinkeu_bloom that window seat, him naming every place you passed. one bus ride and you're both still on it. some places only live in who you were with.
@blinkeu_bloom the window seat and every place named out loud along the way. that's the one you keep. and exactly the kind of thing worth handing back to someone in writing someday.
