Hymnology Season 7 continues with “The Old Rugged Cross,” written by George Bennard in 1912 after reflecting deeply on Christ’s suffering and sacrifice. This hymn has remained beloved through the years because its message never grows old. Christ crucified is still the sinner’s only hope. As we sing of the rugged cross, we’re reminded that Jesus willingly bore our sin so that all who trust in Him would be forgiven and brought near to God.

“Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” was written by Joachim Neander in the 1600s and has been sung by the church for centuries as a call to praise God for who He is and how He cares for His people.
These lyrics direct our attention to the Lord as Creator, Sustainer, and faithful Shepherd. He reigns over all things, provides what we need, and surrounds His people with mercy and care, giving us confidence in who He is. Scripture reminds us that “No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11). Because He is good and sovereign, we can trust Him in every circumstance.
This hymn calls us to respond rightly, with a life of praise. “Let all that is in me adore Him.” Every part of our lives belongs to the Lord, and He is worthy of our worship.

Men of the Word is a ministry focused on grounding men in the truth of Scripture and strengthening them for faithful leadership in every area of life. Through biblical teaching, fellowship, and accountability, it seeks to equip men to grow in Christ and serve faithfully in their homes, the church, and the world.
During this special evening, we will sing hymns meant to be carried through life — songs with lyrics rooted in Scripture that believers can rely on in specific trials and temptations. We are in a battle, not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of wickedness (Ephesians 6:12). These hymns are chosen to encourage and fortify us in that conflict.
Join us for Songs for the Battle with Philip Webb on Wednesday, February 25 at 7 p.m. in the Grace Church Worship Center (fellowship and refreshments begin at 6 p.m.). A livestream will also be available at https://t.co/QAmGcnNiRm
This hymn walks us through the hope of the Christian life, fixing our confidence on Christ and His finished work.
Because He bore our sin, conquered death, and now holds us fast, we can live without guilt and face the future without fear. We are called to rest our confidence where it truly belongs — in Christ alone.

In Christ, we are made one. Even now, as we struggle and press on, we belong to Him and to one another. The same King of glory who reigns in heaven is the One who has united His people by grace.
On this Thanksgiving Day, we give thanks not only for the gifts of this life, but for the greater gift of belonging to Christ and to His redeemed people. Our hope is secure, and our unity is found in Him.

Season 6 of Hymnology continues with “My Jesus, I Love Thee” (#380 in Hymns of Grace).
William Featherston wrote this hymn when he was only a teenager, yet his words reflect a genuine love for Christ that reaches far beyond his years. This hymn lifts our eyes to the Redeemer who loved us first and gave Himself for us.
These lyrics remind us that true devotion grows out of gratitude. We love Christ because He has rescued us, forgiven us, and continues to keep us. And when our love feels weak, His love remains steady and faithful, drawing us back to Himself again and again.

This Reformation Day, Season 6 of Hymnology continues with “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing” (#136 in Hymns of Grace) — a hymn that echoes the heart of the Reformation: Christ alone saves, and to Him alone belongs the glory.
Written by Charles Wesley in 1739 to mark the first anniversary of his conversion, it’s filled with gratitude and praise — a declaration that Christ has broken the power of sin and set the prisoner free. Its opening line was inspired by the words of Wesley’s mentor, Peter Böhler: “If I had a thousand tongues, I would praise Christ with them all.”
Though written more than two centuries after the Reformation, this hymn springs from that same gospel truth — rejoicing in the grace of God, the finished work of Christ, and the believer’s freedom in Him. Its message still calls us today to lift every voice in praise to the Redeemer whose blood “can make the foulest clean.”
May this hymn remind you that the same gospel which transformed Wesley’s heart continues to change ours — drawing the church together in worship to our King.

The name of Jesus brings life and hope. He takes away fear, lifts our sorrows, and gives true peace. Through His blood the power of sin is broken, and freedom is given to all who trust in Him.
As our Lord said, “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). That freedom is both a present reality for every believer and a future hope, giving us strength to walk with Him day by day.

Season 6 of Hymnology continues with You Are the Lord! (#329 in Hymns of Grace), a hymn that proclaims the greatness and glory of our triune God. In every stanza, the words lift our eyes to the One who is eternal, unchanging, Creator of all, Redeemer of His people, and worthy of endless praise. They remind us that there is none like Him. He is the Alpha and Omega, the Maker of the heavens and the earth, the Savior who shed His blood, and the Spirit who gives new birth — Father, Son, and Spirit work together in perfect unity, showing the love that secures us and holds us fast.
May this hymn lead us to deeper worship and humble adoration, to trust Him more fully, and to lift our voices in glad praise to our Lord.
Join us for Season 6 as we journey through more timeless hymns that continue to encourage the church today. Watch the full episode on YouTube (link in bio), and be sure to share and subscribe so you don’t miss an episode. Leave a comment and let us know what this hymn means to you!

Our Redeemer is near — not distant, but gracious and merciful. The Father, Son, and Spirit work together in love to bring us life and keep us in Him. Truly, there is none like our God.
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” — John 17:3
Season 6 of Hymnology continues with The Master Has Come (#399 in Hymns of Grace), a hymn by Sarah Doudney. Though Doudney was better known in her day for her novels, poetry, and magazine contributions, only a few of her hymns have remained in use. Among them, The Master Has Come is one of her clearest and most enduring expressions of faith, pointing believers to follow Christ with steadfast hope.
Following Christ often brings trials and temptations, yet God’s Spirit strengthens the weary, and His people press on with joy, looking upward to their King and resting in the hope of His kingdom.
May these lyrics encourage you to walk closely with Christ, trusting His leading and lifting your eyes to the One who calls us His own.

In Hymns of Grace you will find lyrics to hymns that are sometimes left out of newer hymnals or have appeared in earlier printings. One such example is the hymn “I Am His and He Is Mine” (No. 81). Written by Wade Robinson, it has often been published with only three verses, or with a third verse that speaks of a symbolic, physical embrace of Christ. In Hymns of Grace, however, we chose to preserve a version of verse 3 that had largely fallen out of use — a verse that speaks of Christ’s love, not merely symbolic, but a personal and covenant love that makes us His forever, the very love displayed at Calvary. Our desire is simply to help the church keep singing clearly of Christ’s redeeming love — the love that secures us in Him and moves every voice to lift His praise.

Season 6 of Hymnology continues with Hark, the Glad Sound! Written by Philip Doddridge in 1735, this hymn was first sung on Christmas Day that year in his church at Northampton, England. It is a hymn of Advent and gospel hope, announcing the long-promised Savior who comes to bring freedom, healing, and life.
These lyrics echo the words of Isaiah and Luke’s Gospel — proclaiming Christ as the One who sets prisoners free, gives sight to the blind, binds up the brokenhearted, and pours out His grace on the poor (Isaiah 61:1–2; Luke 4:18). What once was a world in bondage now rejoices, because the Redeemer has come.
Our prayer is that these words encourage you to rejoice in the Savior who breaks the chains of sin, heals our wounds, and gives us an inheritance that cannot be taken away. May our hearts rejoice in Christ, the Prince of Peace.

The Savior has come — the One our hearts have been waiting for. He steps into a world held captive by sin and breaks the chains that bound us. No prison door can keep Him out, no darkness can overcome His light.
What joy to know that Christ sets the prisoner free and heals the broken. He is our Redeemer, our peace, and our song. May our hearts overflow with gladness, rejoicing that Jesus has come to bring freedom and life.

Season 6 of Hymnology continues with O Mighty Cross, a modern hymn reflecting on the power and beauty of Christ’s sacrifice. Each verse points us back to Calvary, where our sinless Lord was lifted high, bearing our guilt and shame so that we might be set free. Though the cross was once a symbol of suffering and death, in Christ it has become for us the tree of life.
We pray that these words remind you of the hope we have in the crucified Savior. At the cross we find peace, forgiveness, and the steadfast love that holds us. The weight of our sin is great, but the mercy of God is greater.
May this hymn lead us to worship the One who gave Himself for us and to rest in the finished work of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer.

The cross of Christ is where love and mercy meet. There He bore our shame, endured the stripes we deserved, and poured out His grace for us.
What once looked like sorrow has become our greatest hope — the place of peace, healing, and release for every soul that trusts in Him. The mighty cross is now our tree of life.
