@AdhdDoing Those with addiction and those with ADHD have similar issues with cognitive control over behavior, i.e. inhibition.
Those with addiction though become conditioned by a certain type of rewarding stimulus to where it dominates one’s life.
@dayoshiime Headspace app all the way.
I thought meditation was phooey until I gave it a serious try.
My breakthrough was realizing that after going through some of the lessons and feeling super calm, I can feel almost as calm again throughout my day just by doing the breathing techniques.
@NataliaADHD As a bonus too, it *really* helps your memory.
Ask me where I worked 15 years ago? Not 100% sure 🤷♂️.
If I look at a few pictures from around that time, now suddenly I can remember dozens of coworkers, projects, and the smallest details sometimes.
@NataliaADHD I sometimes feel my time is wasted because I can’t account for it or remember everything I did.
Journaling can be really helpful- I started a photojournal in 2007 taking pictures of day to day activities. 21,000 pictures later, it’s helped me feel so much better about my life.
@jul13_48@AskADHD I’m no neurochemist, but my understanding is that ADHD isn’t a shortage of dopamine production per se, but that it is either reabsorbed too quickly (reuptake) or not enough is stored at the presynaptic terminal.
It’s a utilization issue, so I’m skeptical of supplements.
@Jenny_English13 @you_may_say Anna hit the nail on the head.
Also no matter what cycle I choose soo many items are not cleaned that well and require rewash, or still not dry.
@merilindir My concern is that if I have trouble remembering who TF certain characters are in movies that I watch (and I’m definitely trying), I’m not too hopeful for courtroom testimony.
A criminal case could increase focus yes, but there’s an equal chance of selection for a civil trial…
How difficult is jury duty when you have #ADHD?
I’ve never been summoned before, but sitting in a room for 6+ hours trying to focus on a trial and not fidget seems like a recipe for disaster and/or a contempt of court charge.

@itshouldbenot I’ve had a lot of success with it, particularly within my note/to-do software.
I use Roam which is an “outliner” but if you have an iOS device you can make sub-tasks within the Reminders app. I can also recommend the Asana app where you can have projects➡️tasks➡️sub-tasks.
@JayR_Xx Yes, but ADHD’ers get shortchanged.
Medical research suggests that people without ADHD get a down payment of dopamine when starting a task AND some more at the end of the task.
ADHD’ers get little to nothing upfront and less at the end.
@iberrettezeria Yes! Sticky notes on my front door have saved the day numerous times. I also put small ones on the back of my phone for short-term stuff.
@you_may_say Using the empty dishwasher as a giant drying rack has worked wonders. It would bug me that the rack on the counter would fill up so fast and I would have to wash/dry/wash/dry.
Now I can just wash them all and walk away while they dry.
@_anondeplume_ @AskADHD I try to be positive and remind myself that I’ve done a lot of the hard work already by creating the habit.
Yeah, I didn’t exercise for two weeks but it’ll still be easier to do it today than when I started.
@Yesitsadhd I’ll second the 20 minutes a day idea. I get overwhelmed with all of the things I need to do, and end up doing nothing.
I’ve had good success with setting my kitchen microwave timer for a hard 20 min limit. For some reason, doing it with my phone timer isn’t as effective.
@fochti I’m having luck with breaking a task into mini-steps. It sounds wasteful to plan the steps of a basic task but incremental progress is still progress.
Return book:
☑️ locate book
☑️ put book on table by front door
☑️ put reminder post-it on front door so I see it as I leave
@TheAybeApp I’m holding off on supplements until there’s more definitive research absent an actual underlying nutrient deficiency.
I’m focusing my efforts on sleep/exercise/green time/sun time/diet instead.

@Andrinanosleep@Evil_esserino I’ll second this for a quick anxiety fix.
My go to is similar - ‘box breathing’ with a 4/4/4 count.

@adhd_ffs @RoamResearch NGL it’s a little pricey but I’ll happily spend it if it helps me to know which end of my day is up.
I suggest demoing a related free service called “Workflowy” first to see if you like the concept, then check out all the roam videos to see it in action.
@aparrotwithadhd I persist with developing my cooking skills.
I’m to the point of reading the recipe a week in advance to ensure I have the ingredients, I have the tools, I have the timing down, I have the order correct. A third of the time I still miss something critical.
