Earlier this afternoon, we conducted our Union orientation program with members of Recruit School 11 who are the newest employees within our department. We are proud to say that 100% of our new recruit class signed up to be members of the IAFF recognizing the value of our union.

Congratulations to Battalion Chief Steve Smith after dedicating over 40 years of service to @fredcova has retired. He began his service after joining the North Mountain Fire Co in the 1970’s. Then in 1993 he was hired as one of the first career firefighters for the County.

Today (finally!!) cancers of the brain, colon and testes as well as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are now covered under the Virginia Workers' Compensation Act. This change is a tremendous victory for Virginia’s fire fighters and their families. And a long-time coming!

Today we remember a tragic day in Virginia history 4/16/2007. Brother Kyle Wilson killed searching for victims in an early morning house fire in Prince William. And at VT 32 victims were killed. We’ll never forget our fallen Brother or the fallen at VT.

Today in Senate action, HB783 was passed unanimously. Now, vital protections against occupational cancer await Governor Northam's signature. Sickened firefighters and their families are much closer to a more fair workers' compensation process.
