Microsoft Research demonstrated that Phi-2, a 2.7 billion parameter language model, matched or outperformed models up to 25× larger on several reasoning benchmarks.

The takeaway isn't that large models no longer matter. It's that scale alone doesn't define capability.

Hosted by the Consulate General of India in Seattle, the forum brought together 40+ Indian-origin technology CEOs and CTOs to exchange perspectives on AI, innovation, talent and opportunities for strengthening the India–US technology partnership. Discussions also covered AI infrastructure, data centres, semiconductors, quantum research, talent and advanced manufacturing.

The presence of IAIRO’s leadership at this important gathering reflects our commitment to building India’s sovereign AI capabilities and strengthening connections across research, industry and the global technology ecosystem.

Climate change is a global challenge, but its impact is always local.

Every heatwave, flood, or drought affects communities differently, making context just as important as the technology used to address it.

In the Deccan Herald article, "Driving Climate-Resilient Decisions with Hyperlocal Intelligence," Dr. Dev Niyogi (Chair Professor, The University of Texas at Austin and Founding Member, IAIRO) and Aditya Patel (Venture Associate, IAIRO) highlight an important reality:

"Environmental and climate-related challenges are inherently local."
They also point out that:

"The associated data is often scattered, unstructured and difficult to operationalise without contextual processing."

These challenges call for AI systems that are built with context in mind, systems that can work with local data, support multilingual environments, operate in low-connectivity regions, and enable timely, informed decision-making.

This is where Small Language Models have the potential to play a significant role. Their ability to run efficiently on local infrastructure while being trained for specific domains makes them well suited for applications such as climate resilience, agriculture, disaster response, and other mission-critical sectors.

With over 15 years of experience bridging life sciences and cutting-edge technology, Som brings deep scientific and technical expertise to our team. From his academic roots at IIT Kanpur to postdoctoral research across Europe, the UK, and the USA, his background spans chemical biology, computational biology, structural biology, and protein engineering.

At IAIRO, Som sets strategic direction for our initiatives across pharma, biotech, and life sciences — leading the development of AI models and platforms, shaping go-to-market strategy, and building partnerships across academia, government, and industry. He also guides our engagement with quantum computing experts on emerging scientific applications, driving next-generation drug design and manufacturing intelligence through domain-specific AI and small language models.

He joins us with a strong track record of co-developing AI-driven solutions for drug discovery and protein engineering at Persistent Systems, in partnership with technology leaders including NVIDIA and Google.
