I believe it's because Raimi Peter and MJ are a lot more emotionally stunted. MJ comes from an abusive household and Peter had to persevere through a lot to take the time to stop and register his emotions. They're a lot less emotionally open which comes to head in Spider-Man 3.

@honeybunwife It really is an anomaly. The hype from the first teaser was palpable. My best guess is that it combines the goodwill and love for MCU Spider-Man with the nostalgia for a struggling Spider-Man that defined the Raimi films. Add to that the additional hype for Punisher and Hulk.
