The UK's leading road safety charity. We want to make our roads a better place by helping drivers & riders achieve confidence & safer, more economical journeys.
โ ๏ธ Drivers are being urged to think twice before following sat-nav re-routing, amid concerns they may be taken onto roads with very different risks to contend with ๐
New research from road safety charity IAM RoadSmart found that 54% of motorists have been diverted onto rural roads ๐ฟ due to congestion on motorways, dual carriageways and other major A roads ๐ง
IAM RoadSmart Director of Policy Nicholas Lyes said: "Every year, more people are killed on a rural road than any other road type, yet worryingly we're seeing a high number of people taking unplanned diversions to use them.

Volunteer Spotlight ๐
One of our dedicated IAM RoadSmart volunteers, Katrina, a former Metropolitan Police Traffic Officer, continues to use her extensive experience in Advanced Driving, rider development, and road safety to support others as an Examiner, Assessor, and Mentor.
Reflecting on her volunteering journey, Katrina said:
โBeing a volunteer for IAM RoadSmart has been an immensely rewarding experience, both professionally and personally. I have had the privilege of supporting countless individuals on their journey towards becoming safer and more confident drivers and riders.โ
From helping nervous candidates build confidence to promoting a culture of safety and responsibility on our roads, volunteers play a vital role in changing lives every day.
โOne of the most fulfilling aspects of the role is witnessing the achievement of candidates as they progress through their advanced training and leave with a genuine sense of accomplishment.โ
Thank you to Katrina and all our volunteers who continue to share their skills, experience, and commitment to road safety. Your dedication makes a real difference. ๐๐๏ธ

๐ง Every five hours, an over-sized vehicle strikes a bridge somewhere in the UK.
๐ While lorries are often involved, they're not the only vehicles at risk. Drivers should never rely solely on sat-navs, which may not always account for bridge heights and route restrictions.
๐ฃ๏ธ Appearing on BBC Morning Live yesterday, Nicholas Lyes, Director of Policy at IAM RoadSmart, said: โThe responsibility ultimately lies with the driver. Every low bridge is clearly marked with warning signs showing the height restriction, and drivers should always know the dimensions of their vehicle.โ

This Volunteersโ Week, we want to say a huge thank you to Shaun Whiter for the incredible work he does as an IAM RoadSmart Ambassador.
In 2016, Shaun was a semi-professional footballer, but his life changed forever after he was seriously injured by a drunk driver while helping a friend at the roadside. Despite losing both of his legs, Shaun refused to give up.
Today, Shaun uses his experience to educate young footballers and drivers about the devastating consequences of dangerous driving โ from drink-driving to distractions behind the wheel.
Through workshops, roadshows and academy talks, Shaun is helping to make our roads safer by sharing a message that could save lives.
Thank you, Shaun, for your strength, passion and commitment to road safety. Your work continues to inspire us all. ๐
