A Volkswagen supercar was built, tested, and even broke records, but it never made it to production. VW created three W12 concepts the 1997 coupe, a 1998 roadster, and the 2001 W12 Nardo, named after the track where it would eventually make history. The original 5.6 liter W12 with 414 horsepower evolved into the 6.0 liter, 591 horsepower monster in the 2001 car. That Nardo prototype ran for 24 hours straight, covering 7,749 kilometers at an average of 200.6 mph and smashing five world records, twelve class records, and the overall 24 hour speed record.
Why it never reached production is unclear. Most likely VW figured the market for a Volkswagen badged supercar was too small, and the technology was better used by Bentley and Audi instead.
