Membrane fission is essential for separating cellular compartments. In eukaryotes, this relies on a protein complex conserved across the tree of life called ESCRT-III. But, how this complex drives membrane fission remains unknown.

(2/2) Javier Espadas shows that ESCRT-IIIA from Heimdallarchaeia drives membrane fission. Yeast experiments support this conserved mechanism, dating back ~2B years.
