This niqabi woman says she urgently needs hip surgery, but the hospitals she has approached want her to remove her face covering before treatment, and she says her faith will not allow it.
I respect religious conviction, but this is where I draw the line.
Religion existed before you were born and will still exist after you’re gone. If temporarily uncovering yourself is medically necessary for doctors to safely treat you, you are not exposing yourself for pleasure or entertainment. You are trying to stay alive.
Health is not something to gamble with just to prove devotion.
Hospitals should respect religious modesty wherever they reasonably can, but when a genuinely necessary medical procedure requires access to your body, your life has to come first.
If you die, life moves on. Religion moves on. The people advising you from the sidelines move on too.
