The NNPCL GCEO, Bashir Bayo Ojulari said that the company will continue drilling for oil in the north and that he will complete the AKK project. He also added that he is a Northern boy, he grown up in Kaduna, and that he started learning Yoruba when he was 15 years old.

In his interview with BBC Hausa, he added that he studied in Zaria and wants the northern people to support him in doing his job, so that it will bring development to the north and Nigeria at large. He also asked for prayers, as his job is not the kind of job that one person can do alone. He urged everyone to join hands and move Nigeria forward. He also said that going forward, you will not hear about Dangote and NNPCL fighting in the newspapers.

SOME SERIOUS DISPARITIES I OBSERVED GRADING IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

There is something I have carried for close to 15 years now, regarding how there exist a great disparity between how students are graded across Nigerian Universities. I had my bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering @ATBU_Connect & I was opportuned to serve in a university, located in southern Nigeria. What I observed on how students are graded is still a shock, and I believe is not just unfair but unacceptable.

In the same Nigeria, some universities use Weighted Average, others use CGPA, yet both award degrees on a 5.0 scale. (NB: I know some award on scales of 7.0).

The bone of contention here is, the Weighted Average system allows you redeem a failed grade, while the CGPA method punishes you forever; even if you pass later. Same student, same effort, different fate.

Dear @NUCNIGERIA @OfficialNUC, is this at all fair?

Let me break it down for further understanding:

1. Weighted Average vs CGPA (on a 5.0 scale)

Weighted Average (WA) Method:

•Here, each course is assigned a weight (usually based on the number of credit units), and your final score is calculated as the weighted average of all your grades over the course of your studies.

•Formula:

Total Weighted Score = (Sum of [Grade Point × Credit Units]) ÷ (Total Credit Units).

•Crucially, some schools using the WA method may not include failed courses once they are passed, especially if the course is retaken and passed in a higher level.

CGPA Method (Cumulative Grade Point Average):

•This method maintains a running average of all grades throughout your academic career, including both failed and passed attempts.

•Formula:
CGPA = (Cumulative Grade Points Earned) ÷ (Total Credit Units Attempted).

•In most cases, even if you retake a failed course and pass it later, the failed grade remains in your record and continues to affect your CGPA.

Now, as a student, let us see the impact of Failing a 5-Unit Course in 100 Level

In a Weighted Average System:

•If you fail the 5-unit course in 100 level and later pass it in 500 level, only the passed grade may be counted (and I have witnessed this happen 😳), meaning your earlier failure has no effect on your final score. In fact, some of these universities allocate 50% weight to final year. Meaning, you can fail your 100 level and 200 level woefully, and still make a 2.1 in 500 Level!

•You are judged based on your best attempt, and often only passed courses contribute to the final degree classification.

In a CGPA System:

•That failed 5-unit course drags your GPA down, and even after passing it later, both the fail and the pass may be recorded, lowering your CGPA permanently.

•Retaking helps, but doesn’t erase the damage done early on.

Is It Fair That Both Methods Exist in the Same Country?

But in my opinion, this isn’t fair at all. Here’s why:

•Different systems, same stakes: Graduates are often evaluated in the job market or postgraduate admissions as if all GPAs are created equal—when they’re not. For instance, @nnpclimited
will say they need only 1st class and 2.1, not considering how some Universities issue theirs.

•A student in a weighted average school might end up with a better final score despite performing similarly (or worse) than a CGPA student, leading to disparities in perceived merit, even though the grading systems themselves are structured differently.
SO:

•The difference in calculation can significantly affect student outcomes.

•It would be more equitable if there were a standardized national grading policy or at least awareness when comparing degrees from different institutions.

•Until then, two students with the same academic journey can end up with vastly different results—just because of where they studied.
