📢@CopaCogeca today announced a mobilisation for May 19, the date on which the @EU_Commission is set to release its Fertiliser Action Plan. This plan, unless there is a rapid change in direction, is unlikely to meet the expectations of the European farming community or address the scale of the crisis that has been unfolding since the outbreak of the conflict in Iran.
The @EU_Commission has both the tools and the means to act in the short, medium and long term. Any delays in taking action in the coming weeks and months, while farmers are already beginning to prepare their stock for the upcoming season, could have major consequences for consumer prices in 🇪🇺and for our ability to support global food security.

Is it possible to take part in a debate in the @Europarl_EN on the consequences of the war in Iran for the 🇪🇺 without mentioning fertilisers or agriculture? Apparently, yes.
At a time when both global agriculture and food security are heavily impacted by the conflict, and when farmers and cooperatives across Europe are being forced into impossible choices as costs become unbearable, the President of the European Commission, @vonderleyen, did not address the issue at all in her opening speech.
We would like to thank the many MEPs, from across the political spectrum, who raised the critical issue afterwards and to recall a few key facts:
✅Yes, Europe has the means to act immediately to ease the pressure on farmers.
✅Yes, Europe has multiple options in the short, medium and long term to address this challenge.
✅Yes, we have been waiting for a fertiliser strategy for quite some time and @COPACOGECA has already a clear and united position on the matter : https://t.co/kckMfdr5Cn
We need urgently EU responses preventing a food inflation crisis!
🔍 Session 2 LIVE at #Cogeca Business Forum.
Harry Smit (@raboresearch) sets the stage by giving perspective on world food market dynamics, health staying at the centre.
Jacob Bennet (Board member at @Lantmannen) & Andrzej Minarczuk (President Kosów Lacki Spółdzielnia Mleczarska) showed through their local examples how cooperatives model can be a vehicle for health and wellness. They also discussed affordability and price competition.
🎙️ Closing words from @COPACOGECA President @LennartN_LRF : "The relationship between agri-food cooperatives and consumers is becoming more direct, more demanding and, in many ways, more strategic.
Consumers' expectations are now more than ever shaping markets, influencing business choices and affecting how our cooperatives position themselves across the food chain. Image and communication of the cooperative model are of substantial importance. These factors shape how cooperatives respond to expectations on transparency, sustainability, affordability and trust, while continuing to deliver for their farmer-owners in a very competitive environment. There is no single answer to these challenges. Different sectors, products and national markets face different realities. But the cooperative model has real strengths to build on. We are all aware of our closeness to producers, our rootedness in local communities, and our long-term approach. Let’s carry this momentum forward!"

🔎As the work in the European Parliament on Horizon Europe 2028-2034 progresses, a coalition of more than 20 organisations dedicated to advancing innovation in Europe’s agriculture and bioeconomy sectors published a joint statement, with a simple and key message to MEPs: Maintain Agriculture and Bioeconomy as priorities for Research and Innovation contributing to Europe’s food security, sustainability and growth across the 🇪🇺
We ask EU legislators to:
🌱Reiterate the importance of Agriculture and Bioeconomy sending a clear signal to researchers, investors and industry that EU is committed to including them as pillars of its sustainable growth strategy
💡Preserving these sectors as priorities is essential for ensuring continuity, maintaining sectoral visibility and safeguarding strategic coherence across the programme.

As talks intensify on the possible conclusion of the EU–Australia trade agreement, serious concerns remain about the balance of the agriculture chapter.
📄 Reports indicate that expanded market access for sensitive agricultural products — including beef, sheep meat, and sugar — raises fundamental questions about the direction of the negotiations.
⚠️ Granting disproportionate concessions in these sectors risks undermining European farmers, distorting markets, and weakening the EU’s long-standing commitment to high production standards and rural sustainability.
✅ A truly balanced and credible agreement must protect the integrity and resilience of European agriculture, ensuring that farmers and agri-cooperatives do not bear a disproportionate share of the burden.

📰JOINT PRESS RELEASE - The entire 🇪🇺 rice sector sounds the alarm: either the EU acts now, or the history of European rice will be erased from our countryside!
During the most recent marketing campaign, rice imports into the European Union reached around 1.7 million tonnes.
A substantial share of these imports enters the EU market with reduced or zero tariffs under existing trade arrangements. At the same time, European producers face higher input costs and must comply with some of the most demanding environmental and production standards in the world. This situation is creating growing uncertainty for producers and processors across the European rice sector.
Against this backdrop, the sector is calling for a swift review of existing policy tools to ensure that they remain effective in safeguarding market stability:
⚖️ Fix the safeguard mechanism: adjust GSP/EBA thresholds so the EU can act quickly when import surges disrupt the rice market.
💶 Update EU rice tariffs: revise Common Customs Tariff duties to reflect real market conditions and support the competitiveness of EU processors.
🌾 Support EU rice production: boost promotion, funding and recognition of rice as a sensitive product in EU agriculture and trade policy.
🤝 Ensure trade reciprocity: imports must meet the same environmental, food safety and labour standards as EU producers.
🛂 Strengthen border controls: enforce EU standards consistently to guarantee fair competition.

🚨RED LINE is deployed in front of the Parliament🚨
MEPs DON'T ACCEPT THE UNACCEPTABLE !
Powerful visual as the @EU_Commission has crossed too many red lines with its #MFF 2028-2034 and #CAP reform proposals. For the first time in its history, European farming through @CopaCogeca say: UNACCEPTABLE.
🔴 20% budget cut for CAP 🔴 End of the CAP’s common structure 🔴 Risking food security for 450M Europeans
👩🌾👨🌾 Farmers are more than food producers. They are:
🌱Environmental stewards
📚Educators
💡Innovators
🤝Community builders

⬛️After a dark summer of EU agricultural policy announcements, many questions and concerns remain - starting with the #MFF and #CAP proposals.
An alternative is both possible and necessary — one that respects the individuality of the CAP, its two-pillar structure, and that secures an adapted to inflation CAP/MFF Budget.
